Did the physics Nobel committee get swept up in the AI hype?

  • John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton share the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics for contributions to modern AI.
  • Hopfield invented an artificial network known as the Hopfield network in 1982, and Hinton developed upon that to create the Boltzmann machine.
  • The development of these machines has led to the AI innovation we see today.
  • Some researchers have praised the decision, stating that the recognition is well-deserved.
  • Others from the scientific community are a bit confused and not convinced, doubting whether AI is part of physics.
  • Some experts note that it is not unusual for a Nobel Prize to be contentious for its scientific field.
  • The award demonstrates the necessity of interdisciplinary research for breakthrough research.
  • Hopfield's research laid the foundation for presenting physical objects and information through mimicking how human neural networks work.
  • Developments related to Hopfield and Hinton's work on AI could help solve the world's biggest problems like climate change.
  • AI is transforming human lives, and Hopfield and Hinton were major contributors to the development of Deep Learning technologies, says a data scientist.

After 147 years, Wimbledon is getting rid of line judges in favor of AI – and adding VAR, which always goes well

  • Wimbledon, the oldest tennis tournament in the world, is replacing around 300 line judges with artificial intelligence at next year’s tournament.
  • The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) is adopting electronic line calling (ELC) technology, an evolution of Hawk-Eye, to determine 'out' and 'fault' calls.
  • ELC works by tracking the ball's movement through 12 cameras and interpreting its location in real time, overseen by a video operator in an external room.
  • This move follows the introduction of AI technology at other major tennis tournaments and reflects the changing landscape of sports officiating.

Cloud and Container | The Attack & Defend Series

  • SentinelOne’s Cloud Security Research Team has launched a new blog series, “Cloud and Container | Attack & Defend” exploring the ins and outs of cloud security from both the threat actor and the defender perspectives.
  • The series will focus on the tactics, techniques and procedures employed by threat actors to compromise cloud infrastructures, and security best practices for addressing those threats.
  • Organizations continue to embrace cloud technologies to look beyond traditional infrastructures and redefine how their applications are built, managed and scaled.
  • Adopting cloud-native platforms, containerized apps and other modern storage solutions is driven by the need for more efficient development and deployment workflows while building resilience.
  • The Com, a group of multiple actors with varying objectives and skill levels, is the most impactful threat actor of 2023, according to SentinelOne's WatchTower team.
  • The Com has been observed in high-profile network intrusion and ransomware attacks, and uses cloud compromise tactics and techniques.
  • The most common root causes of cloud incidents are misconfigured assets exposed to the internet, followed by compromised credentials and vulnerable web apps hosted on the cloud.
  • Sophisticated cloud attacks can involve all three root causes and popular tactics include milestone distribution in attack chains.
  • SentinelOne proceeds with a new Attack post focusing on Kubernetes (K8s) Privilege Escalation, a critical concern in cloud-native environments, in the next blog.
  • The blog will examine how attackers can exploit misconfigurations in K8s, vulnerabilities, or over-permissive roles to escalate privileges and potentially gain unauthorised access to sensitive resources.

This $99 external GPU dock is a complete game-changer

  • The Minisforum DEG1 is a $99 external GPU enclosure that's shockingly simple in its construction and fairly cheap compared to enclosures of years past, though you have to supply your own graphics card.
  • While there used to be dozens of enclosures for sale, today you're left with no-name products with poor reviews - few solutions exist on the market.
  • The DEG1 has a single PCIe x16 slot for a GPU and mounting points for a power supply - two points of power are required, as well as an Oculink connection and a power button.
  • The emerging connection standard, Oculink, makes all the difference when it comes to performance - it is open source and developed by the PCI-SIG group that defines PCIe standards.
  • The DEG1 just works and even supports Plug and Play in Windows, as Jacob Roach tested the Tecno Megamini G1 to use the enclosure and found it powered up immediately on the Windows desktop.
  • Performance-wise, the DEG1 holds up well, even when tested with a high-end GPU like the RTX 4080 Super that can process loads of data at once.
  • Performance loss with an external GPU is inevitable, but the DEG1 holds up well showing a minor drop in performance in some games when compared to a full desktop packing an RTX 4080 Super.
  • The DEG1 is great thanks to Oculink, but the fact that it is not widely adopted is an issue, meaning fewer devices support the standard and thus cannot use the DEG1.
  • Thunderbolt 5 promises more bandwidth than Oculink and has broader adoption, so we may yet see a Thunderbolt 5 devices, although these are likely to be more expensive than the DEG1.
  • The DEG1 is a simple product that executes its function well and its mere existence serves niche applications.

How to install a graphics card

  • Installing a new graphics card is a vital process that can help improve the performance of your computer.
  • If you're removing an old graphics card before installing a new one, first uninstall the old graphics card drivers.
  • Before starting the installation process, disconnect all power cables and then take safety precautions when removing or installing any components.
  • Remove the screws holding the old graphics card to the PCI Express backplate before releasing the clip and lifting it out of the PCIe slot carefully.
  • Next, look at your new graphics card and remove an extra backplate or two if there isn't enough space in the PCIe backing plate.
  • To install the new graphics card, slot it into the PCIe slot, making sure that the PCIe clip is open, and use a screwdriver to screw it in place.
  • Connect the appropriate power cables in the corresponding slots at the end of your new GPU.
  • Before putting your whole PC together and plugging everything in, plug in the power cable, your keyboard and mouse, and a single monitor video cable to see if it works.
  • If you're not seeing any results or improvements, you can attempt to place the card into a different PCle slot.
  • After installation, install new drivers for your new graphics card, and reboot your computer.
