The stars are aligning for a perfect PC handheld — but one thing’s missing

  • The world of handheld gaming PCs is currently dominated by AMD with its semi-custom designs such as the new Ryzen Z2 range, while Intel is slowly making its way into this area with devices like the MSI Claw 8 AI+.
  • However, Nvidia is absent from the conversation even though they have features and hardware that fit the ethos of handhelds perfectly, with special features like DLSS.
  • FSR and XeSS are solid alternatives to DLSS, but DLSS’ AI-assisted upscaling and frame generation still take the cake when it comes to overall quality and performance.
  • DLSS would help improve performance on handhelds with limited access to computing power, and it could also improve battery life.
  • Despite being the center of much criticism, Nvidia still maintains a market share above 80% for desktop graphics cards and make a good product.
  • SteamOS has matured to the point that it’s almost seamless to use, Bazzite is trying to close the gap, and DLSS has some very practical applications in handheld gaming PCs.
  • However, Nvidia's closed-source driver for Linux has been a big roadblock for launching Nvidia handhelds packing SteamOS.
  • Valve has a dedicated team of engineers working with Nvidia to improve driver support, but they warn the experience with SteamOS and Nvidia hardware wouldn’t be great.
  • Nvidia’s Linux support is still not where it should be compared to AMD and Intel, so it hasn’t built hardware for a Linux-based gaming handheld.
  • Opportunities for SteamOS or even forks such as Bazite to provide console-like gaming experiences to any PC hinges on proper Linux support from Nvidia.

These 3 monitors trends dominated CES — and surprised everyone

  • OLED monitors that were once only used for PC gaming are becoming affordable for creators too, with Dell offering a 32 inch QD-OLED panel for just $800 and Samsung's Smart Monitor M9 offering App-like features plus OLED display.
  • LG and Acer have launched 5K monitors (5,120 x 2,160), one impressively featuring 800R of curvature. A 32-inch 5K monitor, the Acer Predator XB323QX, is good enough to rival the OLEDs.
  • Asus has launched the 6K monitor ProArt 6K PA32QCV, offering 218 pixels per inch, though it is primarily a professional monitor.
  • Samsung and LG both showcased 37-inch monitors that are not ultra-wide, suggesting that standard monitor sizes are set to expand beyond the current 32 inches.
  • The focus on size, quality and clarity in monitors is something which is increasingly important due to the rise of remote work which has made home-office set-ups crucial
  • The use of the OLED 5K monitors aim to meet the needs of high-resolution gaming and crisp visual displays, while panel size is significant for making the best monitor choices.
  • Better and larger monitors are now available for creators and businesses alike to boost remote working, therefore it is good to keep an eye on trends in the monitor space as much as CPUs or laptops.
  • More models launched in the future will result in more professionally-made HDR content out in the world, treated to a high visual standard that matches high-quality sound.
  • Large and clear monitors have become increasingly popular due to the remote work shift which has made home-office set-ups necessary.
  • The general trend at CES 2025 on the design of monitors emphasises the importance of picture quality that focuses on resolution, refresh rates, sound, panel size, contrast ratio, and HDR technology.

AMD exec drops hints on RX 9070 pricing and some PC gamers are panicking – but this sounds like good news to me

  • AMD has given us some clues as to the price points RDNA 4 graphics cards will land at, albeit some very vague hints.
  • Frank Azor, AMD’s head of consumer and gaming marketing, has revealed that RX 9070 will be a ‘very competitive product’.
  • The marketing chief confirmed that everything remains on track.
  • The price of the RX 9070 variants has been hotly debated among the gaming community.
  • The GPU is expected to be mid-ranged and predominantly built on the performance offered by RDNA 4.
  • AMD’s chosen name change for RX 9070, versus the RTX 5070 shows the pricing will have to make sense in terms of that showdown.
  • If AMD announces RDNA 4 pre-orders on January 23, then RX 9070 series will be on sale at the end of January.
  • The cost will be viewed through the lens of the card’s performance.
  • AMD remains focused on delivering value for money.
  • When AMD announces RDNA 4, it will introduce a powerful graphics card – not a $300 card, but also not a $1,000 card.

Lenovo Legion Go S vs. Steam Deck OLED: here’s what we know so far

  • Lenovo's Legion Go S is a new handheld gaming device, which is gunning for Steam Deck's position through its upgraded display, processor, and affordable price tag. The entry-level model of the Legion Go S starts at $500, which undercuts the Steam Deck OLED by $50. Additionally, the device is expected to be faster than Steam Deck due to its newer CPU and GPU and increased memory capacity. Although the new Legion Go screen is bigger and brighter than the Steam Deck's, its display is an LCD and doesn't have the rich depth of contrast and colour of the OLED panel of Steam Deck.
  • The device's CPU and GPU specifications are quite dramatic, with Z1, the high-end configuration of Legion Go S, with 8 Zen 4 cores/16 threads looking overpowered compared to the Steam Deck. The last wrinkle to consider is that reportedly, there is no Z2-based Steam Deck 2 currently in the works. The Legion Go S will come with a choice between Windows or SteamOS. The new Legion Go S is significantly more comfortable in hand as compared to the original Legion Go, however, it still not as comfortable as the Steam Deck.
  • The Legion Go S has a thinner profile and sleak design, and its miniature touchpad is perfectly usable. As per the experts, the added clarity, responsiveness and higher frame rate of the Legion Go S could give it a slight advantage in competitive games, but there won't be a lot in it when you factor in OLED's faster pixel response time. The new Legion Go S is likely to be pick due to its newer specs, options, and competitive price, however, Steam Deck's price problem could make it relevant in the fight for handheld gaming's crown.

[Solved] Resource limit exceeded

  • While deploying an OpenSearch domain with logging via CDK, I hit a “Resource limit exceeded” error due to more than 10 resource access policies for CloudWatch log groups.
  • To fix this, I created CloudWatch log groups in CDK and passed their ARNs to a Lambda function.
  • In the Lambda, I used the AWS SDK’s putResourcePolicy to update the existing policy with OpenSearch as the principal and attached the log group ARNs.
  • I also set suppressLogsResourcePolicy: true in OpenSearch to stop CDK from creating resource policies automatically.
  • This bypassed the limit and gave me full control over the policies.
  • Initially, I created both the log groups and the Lambda function within the same construct, while OpenSearch was placed in a different construct that received the log groups as props.
  • This setup caused issues because the log groups were being referenced by the correct log group name in the same construct and a different one outside of the construct in the opensearch construct, which led to the Lambda failing to update the policy correctly.
  • While this solution worked for me, I’m still relatively new to CDK, so there might be better approaches out there.
  • If you have a more elegant solution or if I’ve made any mistakes in my understanding, I’d truly appreciate hearing your thoughts!
  • The GitHub issues I referenced were incredibly helpful in providing context and guiding me toward a solution.
