Microsoft Entra ID App-to-App security architecture

  • This article explains the different setups when using App-to-App security with Microsoft Entra ID (OAuth client credentials).
  • A single Microsoft Entra ID App registration can be used for both the client and the resource specification.
  • The claims in the access token are validated as much as possible to prevent unauthorized clients from using the resource.
  • This can be considered a bad architecture because the ME-ID App registration is used for two separate intentions, the client requesting the access token and the resource providing the service.
  • This architecture allows for separation of clients and is required if more than one client can use the resource.
  • The different clients can be identified in the application using the azp claim or the oid claim.
  • Audit logs can also be per client and the application can implement separate business logic or authorization based on the client_id, object ID (azp or oid).
  • In more complex architectures, the solution might have multiple services. A single client can used multiple resources.
  • The resource implementation, i.e. the API access token validation, the App roles can be used to authorize the request.
  • The default scope is used to access the resource and all roles from the App registration are included in the access token.

How To Process Events Exactly-Once

  • To process events exactly-once, leverage the combination of at-least-once delivery and idempotence.
  • Exactly-once processing is theoretically impossible in distributed systems.
  • Designing a message receiver to be idempotent allows multiple deliveries of a message without any effect.
  • DBOS event receivers, like for Kafka, generate a unique key and use it as an idempotency key for processing workflow.

It’s official — Intel now holds the Windows battery life crown

  • Intel has taken the lead in battery life for Windows laptops with its Lunar Lake chipset.
  • New chipsets, including Qualcomm's Snapdragon X, AMD's Ryzen AI 300, and Intel's Lunar Lake, are expected to improve Windows' performance and battery life.
  • While AMD is currently ranked first in performance among the chipsets tested, both Qualcomm and Intel are focused on achieving maximum efficiency.
  • In terms of CPU performance, none of the integrated GPUs in these chipsets are meaningful upgrades over their predecessors. Discrete GPUs such as Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 will still dominate the gaming and creator laptop markets.
  • Intel's Lunar Lake is the most direct replacement for the firm's U-series Meteor Lake chipsets that run at 15 watts, but the Lunar Lake 8-core chipsets aren't as fast as Intel's Meteor Lake H-series chips that run at 28 watts.
  • Apple's M3 chipset remains the leader in performance-efficiency but Intel's Lunar Lake outperforms Qualcomm's Snapdragon X in terms of battery life.
  • According to early test results, the Asus Zenbook S 14 with the Intel Core Ultra 7 offers the best overall battery life performance.
  • However, technology experts have advised the data is not the entire story, and more testing is needed as companies roll-out on new chips.
  • For now, Intel has taken the lead in battery life for Windows laptops with its Lunar Lake chipset as Windows laptops have never been better.
  • Continued data gathering through further chipset testing and rollouts will be required to fully assess the impact of new chips.

Qualcomm's big chip merge plan paves the way for – wait for it – the return of the Windows Phone

  • Qualcomm is reportedly merging its Snapdragon processors for mobile and PC under one consolidated ‘Elite’ brand.
  • The move brings us closer to more powerful devices that allow users to work on-the-go and then slot a device into a display or keyboard used as a fully-fledged PC when at home.
  • Apple has also been developing chip unification, combining M-series and A-series chips.
  • Qualcomm's powerful Snapdragon X Elite chip has enabled Microsoft to make Windows on Arm-based machines work and we could see Windows Phone return to the market.
  • At Computex 2024, Qualcomm revealed a range of Windows laptops powered by Snapdragon chips.
  • Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon called the Snapdragon X Elite chip ‘the most disruptive thing in computing since Windows 95.
  • However, issues with the quality of the Microsoft app store may hold up the process.
  • The merger is likely a branding maneuver to bring better AI performance to Snapdragon phone processors.
  • Finally, it may be Google who realises the next-generation of consolidated processing devices as many Chromebooks already use mobile-standard chips.
  • The Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook used a Snapdragon 7c chip, very similar to those found in many smartphones.

How to Convert Videos to HLS for Web & Mobile Streaming With AWS Elemental MediaConvert

  • Delivering high-quality video content across a variety of devices and network conditions is more important than ever. AWS Elemental MediaConvert is a cloud-based encoding service that helps you generate adaptive streams to meet the demands of your application.
  • HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) is one of the most popular video streaming protocols that uses encoding and segmentation for delivery of adaptive bitrate streams to your users. AWS Elemental MediaConvert provides an automated video conversion solution that can convert videos to HLS and make the streams available to your users with ease.
  • Using AWS Elemental MediaConvert, you can generate multiple renditions of the stream with different compression settings, such as 360p, 720p, and 1080p, among others. This set up enables client apps to select the optimal stream based on factors such as network connectivity and device resolution.
  • The AWS Elemental MediaConvert workflow consists of uploading a video to the S3 bucket, triggering a Lambda function to create the conversion job, and then using that function to transcode the video. The converted video is then stored in the output S3 bucket, which is connected to a CDN.
  • Another Lambda function is then triggered by the ObjectCreate event in the output bucket to add the playlist URL to the video record in the database. When clients access that record, the video player fetches the master playlist from the CDN and decides which stream to play based on factors like the client's network conditions and viewport size.
  • MediaConvert jobs are added to a single queue by default, but you can create additional queues (up to 10 per region) and assign priorities to jobs when they are added to queues. You can also request quota increases from AWS to ensure your platform can handle growing demand.
  • By leveraging AWS Elemental MediaConvert with S3, Lambda functions, and CloudFront, you can efficiently generate and deliver adaptive HLS streams that provide your users with an optimized viewing experience.

  • AWS aims to reemphasize startups and fast innovation.
  • Keeping up with the maelstrom of change in the industry right now is crucial.
  • Garman thinks that AWS also has to be 'at the cutting edge' of generative AI, with the advent of technology and new innovations.
  • He highlights AWS's platform, Bedrock, that offers access to a wide variety of open and proprietary models and is growing in popularity.
  • Another area of opportunity for AWS is the cost of generative AI, something Garman wants to solve by doubling down on their custom silicon.
  • Garman emphasised the importance of maintaining AWS's pace of innovation and realising the value of custom chips and differentiated data.
  • One area where AWS hasn’t necessarily even tried to compete with some of the other technology giants is in building its own large language models.
  • AWS is 'leaning into' open source and aiming to contribute back to the open-source ecosystem.
  • In the end, Amazon is looking to do it all while ensuring long-term support for businesses betting on the company.

Configuring Logging in AWS EKS Using Fluent Bit and CloudWatch

  • The article covers how to configure logging in AWS EKS using Fluent Bit and CloudWatch both directly and through the Amazon CloudWatch Observability add-on.
  • The Fluent Bit Helm chart is used in conjunction with FluxCD for installation.
  • The Tail Input is used to read log files located in /var/log/containers/*.log and send them to CloudWatch.
  • IAM Roles for Service Accounts (IRSA) must be set up and associated with the service account that Fluent Bit uses for it to work with AWS.
  • A volume is needed for Filesystem buffering, which helps to manage backpressure and overall memory control.
  • The Filter configuration is used to add Kubernetes metadata such as namespace and pod_name for enriched log data.
  • The Amazon CloudWatch Observability add-on installs the necessary resources to collect, aggregate, and create summaries for metrics and logs using CloudWatch agent and Fluent-Bit components.
  • Several DaemonSets are created in the cluster when the add-on is installed.
  • Customizations can be made to the add-on configurations, such as disabling Fluent Bit logs for Accelerated Compute monitoring or skipping collection of NVIDIA GPU metrics.
  • By default, the add-on creates four CloudWatch log groups for storing data, such as performance metrics on running pods, CPU usage, among others.
