The Cloud Resume Challenge — AWS

The Cloud Resume Challenge is a project designed to help people gain hands-on experience with cloud technologies, primarily AWS.
The challenge involves building a resume website while gaining real-world cloud engineering skills like front-end development, creating a serverless backend, managing infrastructure with code, and automating deployments.
The first phase of the project required building a static website with HTML and CSS that was hosted on Amazon S3, followed by configuring a custom domain, DNS, and HTTPS using AWS CloudFront and Route 53.
The next phase was building a backend API that supports a visitor counter on the resume site, requiring setting up an Amazon DynamoDB table to store the visitor count, creating an API endpoint using API Gateway, and connecting everything with AWS Lambda using Python.
The most rewarding part of the challenge was solving problems on their own, which helped them discover what they enjoyed most about cloud development, like automating deployments and working with Infrastructure as Code.
CRC taught about the hands-on experience with AWS technologies like Terraform, AWS CLI, and CI/CD Pipelines.
The Cloud Resume Challenge creator, Forrest Brazeal, made an efficient guidebook to help people understand each challenge.
After completing the Cloud Resume Challenge, the author pursued the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CCP) certification that helped them have a well-rounded understanding of cloud fundamentals.
Andrew Brown’s CCP course on freecodecamp and using practice sets like AWSboy led the author to a successful CCP exam.
The CRC is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to learn cloud technologies, gain valuable skills, and work with AWS.

Apple just gave Final Cut Pro for the Mac and iPad some big upgrades, including a new AI captions tool

Apple has launched Final Cut Pro 11 for the Mac and Final Cut Pro for iPad 2.1, which include AI-powered features such as Transcribe to Captions and Magic Mask.
The Mac version of Final Cut Pro 11 will use Apple's on-device language model and the neural engine of M1, M2, M3, and M4-powered Macs to accurately generate captions.
On the iPad, Final Cut Pro for iPad 2.1 has added four new tools, including 'Live Drawing' that has new watercolour, crayon, fountain, and monoline pen options.
Final Cut Camera, the free app for the iPhone, has received updates such as a level with roll and tilt indicators to ensure the best shot.
Another update is the ability to record Log-encoded HEVC video when shooting with only one or multiple devices.
The updates aim to help people speed up workflows, and they answer the call for many requested features.
The updates on Final Cut Pro for Mac and iPad are free if users already own the app. New users must pay for the app or subscribe, with Final Cut Pro 11 for Mac costing $299.
Final Cut Pro for iPad costs $4.99 per month or an annual fee of $49.99.
Apple also launched a version of Final Cut Camera that allows editing of spatial videos for playback on Apple Vision Pro. Import is possible from an iPhone 16 or Canon EOS R7 with Canon's RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL lens.
These updates deliver on many user requests, and aim to speed up workflows across Final Cut Pro for Mac/iPad.

Broadcom’s VMware strategy is winning despite market friction

Broadcom's acquisition of VMware is going almost exactly as expected when the deal was announced in May 2022.
Customers are actively moving many low value workloads off VMware, but most mission-critical work is staying put, allowing Broadcom to integrate VMware into its highly successful business model.
Broadcom is marketing the economic benefits of going all-in on the VMware Cloud Foundation bundle despite negative sentiment in the press and social media.
Broadcom has done extensive total-cost-of-ownership and economic analysis which appears quite defensible, assuming customers go all-in on VCF.
Broadcom has significant upside to its VMware business if it can convince customers to stay with its VCF bundle.
Several industry surveys indicate a large percentage of customers are looking to migrate off VMware, but migrations are nontrivial and almost always more expensive than staying put.
Broadcom is executing ahead of expectations on its VMware progress and is establishing the basis for a long-term platform asset that will be an industry force for the next decade and perhaps beyond.
Customers should keep the roadmap of Broadcom in mind, negotiate the best deal, and identify low-value/low-risk workloads that can be easily moved to an alternative.
Understand VMware’s AI roadmap and spend ample time evaluating its ecosystem partners' approach when it comes to data feeding AI.
Broadcom's non-GAAP operating margins are historically above 60% and four to six times better those of most virtualization competitors/partners (e.g. Dell, Nutanix, Red Hat/IBM, HPE and so on).

Today's Wordle answer is so hard it nearly cost me my 1,045-game streak – and it's all the NYT's fault

The game Wordle is becoming increasingly difficult over time, according to a writer attempting to maintain one of the longest recorded winning streaks.
The average score of a round has crept up because the game's creator, Josh Wardle, is running out of obvious word options to include.
The writer behind the column says that each game has come to be seen as a challenge to maintain the high score that has been amassed over an extensive period of time.
Thursday's game proved particularly challenging for players, as the correct answer was "UVULA", a word meaning the soft tissue at the back of the throat. It has an average score of 4.9 among all players completing the puzzle, and was rated as one of the hardest Wordle puzzles ever.
Other disputed tough Wordles included "PARER", which earned a 6.3 average score, "MUMMY", with a 5.8 average and "PRIMP", with a 4.5 average.
The game was created by Wardle and his partner, and enjoys widespread popularity as a quick and addictive online tool in which players must guess a word with only five chances.
Overall, the game has an average score of 3.964, calculated across 956 games. Its most common word is "LASER", with an average score of 3.3.
To date, there have been 10 solutions to the game created by the New York Times, which have boosted the game's average score owing to these being particularly tricky solutions, including "SNAFU", "BALSA" and "MOMMY".
Wardle has said the popularity of the game exceeded his expectations, telling The New Yorker this month that, for the pair, designing the game was "just a way to hang out and distract ourselves from our real lives".
The game has come a long way in 1,246 rounds which have lasted since 2022. A Google extension allows users to play the game on Chrome. The most-clicked tweet on Wordle was posted by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who tweeted about the game whilst congratulating HCL Technologies.
