Amazon Inspector Deep-Dive : CIS Benchmark, Container image and SBOM

  • Amazon Inspector involves several features like ECR scanning, CIS benchmarks, and SBOM generation which enhance the security strategy to detect vulnerabilities, ensure compliance, and gain visibility into software components.
  • ECR in Amazon Inspector scans container images in Elastic Container Registry (ECR) for software vulnerabilities, generating findings on package risks.
  • Scanning Docker images in ECR with Amazon Inspector gives us an insight into CVEs that need to be fixed.
  • CIS benchmarks assess EC2 instance configurations against security standards using Amazon Inspector.
  • CIS scans can be done for specific instances and can also be applied across multiple accounts if you're a delegated administrator.
  • The Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) provided by Amazon Inspector generates a detailed inventory of software components in your codebase which allows the identification and addressing of vulnerabilities more effectively.
  • SBOM export is not currently supported for Windows EC2 instances.
  • By exporting an SBOM, you gain transparency, documentation of all components within the software, and faster response and mitigation efforts in case of a security incident.
  • Amazon Inspector can be connected to Athena to search for specific packages, integrated with OpenSearch to build a package search engine, and analyzed with Lambda as soon as the SBOM export is done for a specific package.
  • In the next part of the Inspector series, the integration of Amazon Inspector with other services will be discussed.

ScaleOps raises $58M to accelerate Kubernetes configuration automation

  • ScaleOps Labs has raised $58m in a Series B round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from existing investors NFX and Glilot Capital Partners, and new participant Picture Capital. Since finalising its Series A round 11 months ago, the firm raised $80m overall. ScaleOps provides a cloud resource management platform that can help enterprises save up to 80% on Kubernetes application deployments costs.
  • Kubernetes, an open-source container orchestration tool, is used to manage modular components of cloud-based applications. However, coordinating Kubernetes applications currently involves manually adjusting resource consumption, a process ScaleOps aims to automate with AI. Two new features being added to its platform will speed up cost savings by 50% and improve application performance.
  • Kubernetes' scalability problems stem from the difficult process of managing and maintaining Kubernetes environments; the resource configurations often used are largely static and do not reflect current needs, meaning teams can spend hours adjusting them manually to ensure they avoid under or over-provisioning cloud resources consumed by their apps.
  • ScaleOps automates this process with AI, allowing Kubernetes deployments to be managed and their configurations to be adjusted based on demand. This ensures every app has optimal resources to run without performance problems while maintaining cost control. The software can be integrated with cloud platforms like AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud and on-premises environments.
  • New customers since the last funding round include Fortune 100 firms such as Cato Networks, SentinelOne and Wiz Inc.
  • Two new capabilities added to the ScaleOps platform to accelerate cost savings include AI-powered predictive scaling in real-time and intelligent pod placement. These can additionally promote application performance while delivering up to 50% additional cloud cost savings.
  • ScaleOps co-founder and CEO Yodar Shafrir said the firm aims to provide a solution that seamlessly automates cloud resource management in real-time, and added that no one in the market was solving the problem.
  • David Gussarsky, from Lightspeed Venture Partners, praised ScaleOps as the clear category leader in cloud resource management and its automation abilities as a breakthrough. He added that their rapid growth over the past year underlines the critical nature of fulfilling the market's needs.
  • The new funding and capabilities come just 11 months after the firm secured its Series A funding.
  • ScaleOps' platform allows enterprises to save up to 80% on Kubernetes application deployment's costs.

LocalStack raises $25M to help developers emulate and test cloud apps locally

  • Swiss startup LocalStack has raised $25 million in a Series A round led by Notable Capital to help developers emulate and test cloud apps locally.
  • LocalStack has shifted the development process off the cloud and onto a developer’s local machine to emulate the environment where it will go live.
  • Initially, it focused on helping an Atlassian employee work while commuting, however, now with an impressive roster of self-serve customers, it has moved into a full-time business.
  • LocalStack’s offering consists of an emulator, which is a Docker image, and a cloud platform for team collaboration, telemetry data, insights and more.
  • It supports 100 core AWS services, including IAM via Amazon Cognito, Amazon Kinesis data streams and Amazon’s interactive query service Athena.
  • LocalStack is looking to ramp things up and go multi-cloud, adding support to Microsoft’s Azure, expected to be available sometime in 2025.
  • The company already has a global team of more than 50 operating mostly out of Europe, with a substantial customer base in the U.S.
  • LocalStack has already operated largely under the radar, but has substantial revenue numbers and 900 paying customers including Apple, Comcast, IBM and Workday.
  • Developers are already able to mock out certain parts of their infrastructure locally to run tests and AWS SAM itself also offers some tools to enable developers to emulate some of its services locally.
  • However, LocalStack is more comprehensive, supporting more than 100 core AWS services, and is almost like a drop-in replacement for AWS cloud.

Resolving a mysterious problem with find

  • The author encountered unexpected behavior while searching for file names using the 'find' command in a shell script.
  • By default, the output of the 'find' command contained invisible null characters after each file name, causing issues in subsequent operations.
  • To fix the issue, the author used the 'strings' command to extract ASCII strings from the input, effectively splitting the string of file names into individual names.
  • For those without the 'strings' command, the author suggests using 'sed' to replace the null characters with newlines.

Box deepens AI integrations with customizable, no-code agent builder tools

  • Cloud content management platform, Box Inc., has launched two new AI-powered tools- Box AI Studio and Box Apps. Box AI Studio allows companies to create customised Box AI ‘agents’, with the ability to choose from an array of underlying language models. Box Apps is an automated studio enabling the creation of intelligent applications for a range of business processes including: invoice processing, contract management and employee onboarding. Box co-founder and CEO, Aaron Levie, states that the company is aiming to extract greater value from the vast amount (vast majority) of enterprise content through artificial intelligence.
  • Box AI already works with Microsoft Azure OpenAI, Amazon Web Services AWS Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI and is integrated with existing LLMs. Users will be able to select from a range of specific large language models to create agents for a variety of work-related tasks. The company claims that its ability to mix and match LLMs from different providers is a unique feature. Box Apps will be in beta test mode for the moment, with the package including Box Blaze, Box Forms and Box Doc Gen.
  • The updates reflect Box’s focus on enhancing its AI-related investments, and helping organisations leverage value that is held within their content. In addition to creating custom agents, users of Box AI Studio can access boxed AI Sales, Marketing, Product and Service agents for common business processes. Box Apps uses metadata to manage “content-centric” business processes to automate at scale. Newly-launched security and compliance capabilities include Box Archive, Content Recovery as well as the new Enterprise Advanced plan for customers.
  • Box Co-founder and CEO, Aaron Levie said AI was allowing companies to enter a ‘new world of work.’“Most of our content is underutilised. We’re not really tapping into the full value of all this enterprise content… We’re identifying the best language model for the specific work scenario. We’re really able to configure the AI for the specific use case.”
  • Holger Mueller of Constellation Research Inc. believes Box is tackling two problems at once, allowing users to build their own AI applications that leverage the data in Box while also improving the extensibility of its cloud content management platform with no-code capabilities.
  • Box’s Enterprise Advanced plan for customers grants access to its full AI-based content management features in one package. Launching in January 2022, the plan will be joined by the Enterprise Plus launch, which will supply organisations with Box AI Studio, Box Apps, Box Forms, Box Doc Gen, Box Archive, and enhanced developer tools.
  • The combination of AI and Box archive is not just limited to legacy storage, but is also being rolled out to help combat ransomware, where it will provide content recovery to help restore inaccessible content or sensitive data.
  • IDC analyst Holly Muscolino confirms Box’s updates, stating, “Its ease of use, regional deployments, and strong security capabilities make Box a good option for organizations of all sizes that are looking for a modern SaaS intelligent content cloud services platform”.
  • Box’s competitors include Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Egnyte, Amazon Do, Synology C2 Storage, iDrive, and PCloud.
  • Box has posted total full-year revenues of $878.89m for 2021, a YoY increase of 11%, or $87.95m.
  • Box’s shares last closed at $26.48, up 2.1% following the news. Source: Data from Refinitiv and CNBC
