Building a Cloud File Uploader with Bash (Phase 1 of Learn to Cloud)

  • This article explains how to build a file uploader script that automates file uploads from a local system to Amazon S3 using Bash.
  • The script starts by checking the right version of Bash and grabbing the AWS credentials from a local .env file.
  • The script also lets you specify multiple files for upload and create a folder in your S3 bucket, making things more organized.
  • The article's author has also added an ASCII art for fun and created a help menu to ensure the script is user-friendly.
  • The script uses the AWS CLI to upload multiple files and outputs messages with respective error codes if the upload fails.
  • Additionally, the script provides the option to create a folder in S3 for organized upload.
  • Implemented get ops functionality to parse provided flags and values from the command line.
  • This practical project is a straightforward way to get familiar with cloud concepts while working with AWS services and improve your Bash scripting skills.
  • Future plans for the project include adding a progress bar, file synchronization to check cloud files, and displaying shareable links.
  • The complete script is available on the author's Github profile.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 hits turbulence with reports of the game bringing internet connections to their knees – but don’t grab the sick bag just yet

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 can use up to 180Mbps bandwidth with high detail settings and over densely populated areas, according to a video on YouTube, which four test flights in the technical alpha of the game.
  • This works out to around 81GB per hour of gameplay, figures that could worry some PC gamers.
  • However, Tom's Hardware notes that this is a worst-case scenario and that the actual bandwidth required comes in spikes while the vast majority of the time, the game will require between 10 and 30Mbps when lower detail settings are used.
  • This test was conducted at 4K resolution, Ultra detail settings which is a level that not all gamers will be running.
  • While there is a concern over bandwidth for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Microsoft has trimmed the game installation down to 30GB while also allowing content to be cached, both manually and automatically, thus scrubbing some of the worry beyond the final version's release.
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 also has an increased recommended connection bandwidth to 50Mbps, and 100Mbps is now the ideal spec
  • However, expansion packs could push bandwidth requirements higher, making communication providers a potential stumbling block.
  • In fact, the total install size, as it stands, is only 9GB, with full game installation size set at 30GB - providing gamers with quick access to the game and everything they need upon launching it.
  • The full picture about FS 2024 will be clearer when the game is finally released.
  • Microsoft's screenshot all but confirms that the game will not only be released on the Microsoft Store but probably on Steam too.

Preprocessing text to make it more compressible

  • The Burrows-Wheeler transform (BWT) permutes text in order to make it more compressible by exploiting repetition.
  • The BWT lists all the rotations of a string, sorts the table, and takes the last column as the transform value.
  • The BWT rearranges text in a way that makes run-length encoding more efficient.
  • The BWT is reversible and tends to cluster similar letters together, making it suitable for compressing natural language text.
