My exciting journey into the world of Microsoft Azure and the Cloud Resume Challenge

  • The Cloud Resume Challenge originated as a blog post authored by Forest Brazeal that helps people get hands-on learning about the cloud platform of their choice by building a fully functional resume website with an API that tracks the number of visitors to the site.
  • The author started this project after earning his AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals certification and held AZ-104 (Administrator Associate) and AZ-305 (Solutions Architect) certifications at the time of publishing.
  • The Cloud Resume Challenge is broken up into 16 parts that include building a website, configuring HTTPS, configuring DNS, and writing unit tests.
  • By following the Cloud Resume Challenge, the author was able to build a fully functional resume website with an API that tracks the number of visitors to the site.
  • The author's site was originally created using an Azure storage node but was later migrated to a Python Flask app hosted on App Service so that secrets could be securely stored and accessed.
  • The author used Cosmos DB for the visitor counter database and an Azure Function App coded in Python using the Python Programming Model V2 for the API.
  • The author wrote a small script that creates an event listener with the trigger "DOMContentLoaded" that fetches the updated visitor counter every time the page is loaded, and inserts that into the web page.
  • The author used Bicep to automate the setup of all of the necessary resources for this project and GitHub to store his code.
  • The author used both GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps pipelines to test his code and automate the deployment of infrastructure.
  • The author used Az PowerShell commands to deploy one or a few templates at a time when deploying a resource and storing some secret property from that resource in Key Vault.

M4 Ultra: Everything we know about Apple’s mysterious Hidra chip

  • Apple is reportedly working on a new high-performance chip called “Hidra” that will appear in its Mac Studio and Mac Pro devices as the M4 Ultra.
  • Hidra is being touted as a potential major step up over the previous M2 Ultra.
  • Mark Gurman, Bloomberg reporter, believes the new Mac Studio will launch in the first half of 2025, whilst the Mac Pro is expected to launch during the second half of the year.
  • If rumors are to be believed, the M4 Ultra chip will boast up to 32-core CPU and up to 80-core GPU which would be a significant improvement over Apple’s previous chips.
  • Apple could potentially use WWDC to tease the Hidra chip and launch it later in the year, interest in the event making for the perfect stage/occasion.
  • The M4 Ultra will almost certainly come to the Mac Studio and the Mac Pro, but reports suggest that Apple has ceased work on its Extreme chip due to complications in the manufacturing process.
  • Mark Gurman believes that the M4 Extreme was too expensive to manufacture and would make the Mac Pro far too niche to be worth Apple’s time.
  • Given the lack of rumors circling ahead of updates to the Mac Studio and Mac Pro, speculation surrounding the arrival of Apple's M4 Extreme seems unlikely.
  • We should therefore expect to see the Hidra chip in the form of the M4 Ultra.
  • The M4 Ultra will almost certainly have a significant impact and provide an enhancement in specs and performance on previous Apple chips.

Compliance Tools for Cloud Environments

  • Compliance tools are essential for ensuring that cloud environments meet regulatory, legal, and organizational requirements.
  • AWS Compliance Tools- AWS Audit Manager that automates evidence collection for audits, AWS Config that tracks changes and evaluates compliance, AWS Security Hub that provides a unified view of security and compliance status, and AWS Artifact that is a central repository for compliance-related documentation
  • Microsoft Azure Compliance Tools- Azure Policy that ensures resources comply with corporate standards, Azure Security Center includes regulatory compliance dashboards, and Azure Blueprints that defines repeatable configurations for resources
  • Google Cloud Compliance Tools- Google Cloud Security Command Center (SCC) detects misconfigurations and vulnerabilities, Google Assured Workloads automates compliance requirements for workloads, and Google Cloud Policy Intelligence audits and suggests IAM policies to minimize over-permissioned roles
  • Multi-Cloud and Third-Party Compliance Tools - HashiCorp Sentinel ensures infrastructure changes adhere to compliance requirements, Prisma Cloud (by Palo Alto Networks) provides compliance reporting and monitoring for multi-cloud environments, CloudHealth by VMware tracks security and cost compliance for AWS, Azure, and GCP, Qualys Cloud Platform monitors cloud assets for vulnerabilities and compliance, and Aqua Security focuses on container and Kubernetes compliance.
  • Evaluation of AWS Security Hub – This security management tool directly integrates with AWS services, provides a consolidated dashboard for compliance and security issues, highlights compliance standards like PCI DSS and NIST 800-53, and automates remediation using AWS Lambda functions.
  • Strengths of AWS Security Hub are AWS native integration, custom insights for compliance evaluation, scalability for monitoring multi-account AWS environments using AWS Organizations and immediate detection of non-compliant resources.
  • Weaknesses of AWS Security Hub include its AWS-centric focus, complexity in requiring knowledge of AWS Config, Lambda, and other AWS services for advanced customizations, and costs that may rise with large workloads.
  • Pricing of AWS Security Hub entails additional costs for integrated services like GuardDuty or Inspector, with example monitoring of 1,000 resources costing approximately $10.
  • Recommendations include considering AWS Security Hub for organizations heavily reliant on AWS and seeking a native compliance tool without third-party integration, while multi-cloud environments may benefit from alternatives like Prisma Cloud or Qualys.
