AWS Identity and Access Management

  • Authentication ensures that the user is who they say they are.
  • AWS Identity and Access Management is an AWS service that helps you manage access to your AWS account and resources.
  • To help control access and manage identities in your AWS account, IAM offers many features to ensure security.
  • The AWS root user is an all-powerful and all-knowing identity in your AWS account. If a malicious user gains control of root-user credentials, they can gain access to every resource in your account.
  • An IAM user represents a person or service that interacts with AWS. Any activity done by that user is billed to your account.
  • An IAM group is a collection of users. All users in the group inherit the permissions assigned to the group.
  • To manage access and provide permissions to AWS services and resources, you create IAM policies and attach them to an IAM identity. Whenever an IAM identity makes a request, AWS evaluates the policies associated with them.
  • IAM roles are created and then “assumed” by trusted entities and define a set of permissions for making AWS service requests.
  • The AWS Security Token Service is a web service that enables you to request temporary, limited-privilege credentials for IAM users or for users that you authenticate (federated users).
  • Use IAM appropriately. IAM is used to secure access to your AWS account and resources. IAM is not used for website authentication and authorization, such as providing users of a website with sign-in and sign-up functionality. IAM also does not support security controls for protecting operating systems and networks.

What Microsoft’s financial disclosures reveal about Azure’s market position

  • Microsoft has made an accounting change that removed certain mature, slower growth revenue streams from Azure, leading to an increase in growth rates for AI services contributions within Azure.
  • Investors are excited about the increased growth rates and AI contribution within Azure. But the accounting change reduces the size of the Azure business and its resulting revenue market share.
  • Leaked court documents from 2023 revealed that Microsoft’s infrastructure-as-a-service business was significantly lower than previously thought. This reduced Azure’s overall revenue, leading to an increase in AWS’ lead.
  • New estimates show that Azure is the fastest-growing of the big four clouds, approaching $70B in CY 2024 with 33% market share among the Big Four.
  • Microsoft has a commanding lead with respect to account penetration of AI, with Azure OpenAI Service, the Azure AI Studio, and the Azure ML service outpacing all others.
  • Microsoft is laying down the gauntlet on AI investments, in effect, forcing other vendors to disclose their AI revenue. The AI guidance is a key indicator of interest for investors and customers.
  • Investors will be looking at earnings season among the big three clouds (Amazon, Google, and Microsoft).
  • Microsoft’s reporting highlights its AI contribution to Azure and its accelerated growth rates, which experts believe will continue to be an increasingly important metric in the coming quarters.
  • Microsoft's CFO, Amy Hood, stated that Azure growth included eight points from AI services where demand remained higher than available capacity. How this statement maps to Azure's AI contribution is still being analyzed.
  • The content is not investment advice and should not be used as the basis for any investment decision. No one else has any editorial control over or advance viewing of what’s published.

Another day, another huge Windows 11 24H2 update bug, this time triggering the dreaded Blue Screen of Death

  • The Windows 11 24H2 update is causing bugs with Western Digital SN770 and SN580 SSDs, leading to crashes and the dreaded blue screen of death.
  • These SSDs are DTAM-less, meaning they lack Dynamic Random Access Memory and instead rely on an NVMe feature called Host Memory Buffer (HMB) in which metadata is stored in PC main memory.
  • Normally these SSDs ask the PC to allocate 64MB of HMB to store temp info, but with the update, they are asking for up to 200MB and causing the BSOD.
  • Users on Western Digital's community forum have reported the issue since September 2021, and there is a potential workaround even though no official communication has been made by Microsoft or Western Digital.
  • DRAM-less SSDs are typically affordable and consume less power, making them suited to laptops and mobile phones. Their performance, however, takes a hit since accessing data via HMB causes latency and more issues due to improperly managed HMB.
  • It is not yet clear how many users are affected as Microsoft and Western Digital are undoubtedly working on patches and firmware updates.
  • No major OS updates are without issues. In April 2021, Microsoft's KB5001330 update for Windows 10 caused similar bugs, including BSOD.
  • Windows 11 24H2 update bugs are not as severe as Windows 10's April 2021 update, but more bugs may come with new Windows 11 versions.
