Postcards and a Mac: Niléane’s Desk Setup

Niléane, in an article on MacStories, gave a quick tour of her desk and offered a glimpse of her desk setup.
The desk arrangement centers around her M2 MacBook Air, which uses a 28.2-inch Huawei MateView monitor, hooked up with a TwelveSouth HiRise Pro.
To connect the MacBook to the monitor, she settled on the Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock Pro which provides an ethernet port, five USB-A ports and a standard USB-C port.
To enhance her audio experience during Comfort Zone, a podcast show, Niléane replaced her Blue Yeti microphone with an Audio-Technica ATR2100X microphone attached to an Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP mounted with an Elgato Heavy Base.
To record the video portion of her podcast, she uses an old iPhone SE (2020) and with the help of a MagSafe-compatible case, she uses a Belkin MagSafe mount, standing atop a beautiful LEGO Orchid set.
The key light Neo by Elgato is also a new addition to her desk, serving as the perfect accessory for video calls.
Finally, to prioritize the importance of fun for a work desk, there are endearing items such as a tiny Baby Yoda figurine, an iPad Nano, and a yellow corgi-shaped fidget toy lying about the surface of the desk.
While she plans to add a few more items to her setup, including an audio interface, and a second yellow HomePod mini, Niléane is satisfied with her current desk setup.
Above all, this cosy corner feels like a space where Niléane enjoys spending time, from early mornings all the way to sleepless nights.

Russian government purchases of Apple iPhones rise

The Russian government has increased its purchases of iPhone devices in the first nine months of 2024, acquiring four times more compared to the previous year.
Despite restrictions on certain officials using Apple products, the value of iPhone contracts for the first three quarters amounted to 6.9 million roubles ($71,469), up from 1.6 million roubles the year before.
The surge in purchases comes despite concerns that iPhones are vulnerable to Western intelligence agencies and Apple halting exports to Russia due to the conflict in Ukraine.
Russians have been using grey or parallel imports to obtain Apple devices, showing high demand for the latest iPhone 16 model.

Apple’s artificial intelligence efforts are still very much in catch-up mode

Apple's AI efforts will begin rolling out five days after their new iPad mini release. The signature feature of Apple Intelligence will be notification summaries. However, they seem underwhelming compared to competitors like Google and OpenAI rating somewhat lower in accuracy to Siri.
Even internal studies at Apple show that the generative AI technology is still behind industry leaders by at least two years. Apple will undoubtedly develop, hire, or acquire its way into the top tier of AI companies.
Some at Apple predict the company could be successful despite the long way it needs to go to match its intense marketing hype and could acquire the top talent from the competition.
It appears Apple's prior leadership lacked a vision for the current state of technology and its impact, thus placing the company in a scramble mode. Apple may use this as an opportunity to catch up and later surpass the competition as it did with Apple Maps.
Apple will unveil its catch-up work in iPhones that have built-in, on-device generative AI and new AI-driven features they market to enhance privacy in June at WWDC 2024.
Apple is still a cherished brand with limitless resources and undoubtedly has the talent and capital to close the technology gap with competitors quickly.
Apple's marketing team must sell, sell, sell the company's AI features to new customers desperately to maintain their market position and bring products to market quickly.
Apple's HR team has seen major departures, including the top recruiting executive and a reduction in investments by major stakeholders like Warren Buffet's investment firm,
Apple's new iPad supports Apple Intelligence, so the real test of Apple's AI venture will be when the new iPad rolls out with these features a few days after its release.
Apple's streaming service offers compelling original series unknown to many viewers, and Apple's iOS, iPadOS, and macOS 'AI Features' reveal at WWDC may likely end up being mostly a marketing exercise.
