System Usability Scale (SUS) Practical Guide for 2025

  • System Usability Scale (SUS) is a questionnaire that measures perceived usability of a system.
  • SUS questionnaire consists of 10 Likert scale questions which participants answer on a 1-5 scale.
  • SUS helps measure perceived ease of use for any system (physical or digital).
  • Scoring SUS brings a bit of complexity, but its consistency, simplicity, and commonality in the industry make it a worthwhile choice to leverage.
  • In this article, we provided a practical guide on the System Usability Scale including calculating and interpreting SUS scores.
  • To score SUS, take each positively-oriented question score and subtract one from the participant’s answer. Take each negatively-oriented question score and subtract the participant’s answer from five.
  • The average SUS score is 68. A SUS score of 80.8 is in the top 10% of all SUS scores, and a score of 68 corresponds to a “C” grade.
  • While the usage of SUS appears to be waning based on recent trends, its simplicity and effectiveness ensure it will remain a valuable resource in the UX researcher’s toolkit for years to come.
  • It is important to follow the standard SUS questionnaire to ensure consistent results.
  • UXtweak offers a wide array of testing options suitable for early prototype stages or established products.

Marketing Behavioural Science: The Reciprocity Principle (give to get)

  • The Reciprocity Principle is based on the idea that when someone gives you something, you feel obligated to give something back.
  • In marketing, this principle is applied when a company provides something of value for free, and in return, expects the recipient to provide their contact details or attention.
  • A common example is when a marketer offers a free white paper in exchange for the recipient's name and email address.
  • Small gestures, such as offering candy or personalized gestures, can significantly influence customer behavior and increase engagement.

Features shouldn’t feel like features

  • Product experiences should feel natural and intuitive for users, rather than like a collection of distinct features.
  • Designing for the user and their unique needs creates an experience that is seamless and designed to be part of the user's workflow.
  • Experiences are more than just bullet point features on a roadmap - it's about the feeling of how all aspects of the product come together to create a cohesive solution.
  • This type of experience-driven design eliminatess complexity and removes friction from users' lives rather than adding more features to the product.
  • Creating an experience that feels natural and eliminates friction points involves understanding the user's story, and detecting their moments of frustration.
  • Rather than adding features, this design process involves removing what is unnecessary and making everything feels natural.
  • Ultimately, the goal is to create products that just work the way users expect them to work, without the need for explicit features or instructions.
  • Investing in experience-driven design will lead to products users love, tools that feel tailor-made for them and seamless experiences they cannot imagine any other way.
  • The most elegant solutions often involve removing complexity rather than adding features.
  • Creating truly exceptional products requires a fundamental shift in how products are designed from feature-driven to experience-driven design.

"Friction is at the heart of creativity" says panel at The New Standard talk

  • "Friction is at the heart of creativity" was the consensus when a panel hosted by Dezeen and The New Standard met in New York to discuss the importance of productive collaboration".
  • Designers were cautioned not to become trapped in elitist echo chambers and encouraged to seek out partners with differing perspectives.
  • Sharing vulnerability and honest dialogue are also essential, as is making space for differing opinions.
  • Innovative ideas, panelists agreed, were not generated in isolation.
  • Moderated by Dezeen's US editor Ben Dreith, the panel included representatives from Universal Design Studio, Map Project Office, Made Thought, New Balance, and the Brooklyn Museum.
  • Participants also highlighted that successful collaborations required the ability to embrace messiness and to focus on the systems, people, and interdisciplinary approaches that underpin successful design and communications work.
  • According to Kimberli Grant, Brooklyn Museum contemporary art curator, successful collaboration requires a company culture that actively listens to staff and valued partners.
  • Michaela Crompton, strategy director at Made Thought agreed, adding that "embracing informality doesn't always have to be a creative review, which sounds intimidating. It can be a kick-around for a chat, a conversation, sharing ideas, and listening to each other."
  • Design groups were also urged to reject control and take chances.
  • Chuck Mauro, global marketing director at New Balance said, "Risk is really everything. Letting go is a necessary part of collaboration."

  • Overlay helps API providers publish and manage API descriptions, supporting automation, quality assurance, and governance functions.
  • Each update is based on an Action Object, which represents an imperative.
  • Implemented as an official version, Overlay Specification can be leveraged across the API lifecycle whenever an update to a given OpenAPI document is required.
  • A JSON or YAML document, known as Overlay, describes a series of updates to OpenAPI descriptions using update and remove.
  • Overlay improves quality, reduces errors, and frees up technical resources in many departments across an organization.
  • Overlay Specification provides a consistent, deterministic mechanism for updating one or more OpenAPI descriptions.
  • The Overlay document can be used to process a given OpenAPI document.
  • Using Overlay helps in standardizing security requirements, clean-up mechanism, default & standardized error responses for APIs.
  • Interoperability is one of the reasons why standards exist and why initiatives like Overlay are so important to the API community.
