The bathroom has become "an experience" say design experts on Graff x Dezeen panel

Interior designers say that the biggest focus in post-Covid interior design has been on bathrooms, which have become central to the conversation around wellness in the home. The panelists were brought together by Dezeen and the tapware brand Graff at the recent BDNY trade fair in New York, to discuss "the bathroom trends redefining wellness". Before the pandemic, interiors conversations were dominated by functionality and the aesthetic value of living spaces. However, lockdowns and a general shift towards wellness rejuvenated interest in the bathroom and the mood and feeling of the space.
The conference discussed why wellness became an essential element of interior design and how interest in it coincided with other bathroom innovations, particularly relating to technology, materials, and ambiance. The conference participants suggested the association between water and wellness as well as the bathroom’s small size for renovation projects, which helped elevate this room's stature.
The panellists agreed that classic design elements of colour and materials showed how clients were seeking to bring wellness into their bathroom spaces. There is an interest in components that bring the visual charm of patina and natural ageing, while there is also an interest in giving more regard to the psychology of colour. Partnering colour with unique lighting and applying different lighting modes for the day and evening helps people to regulate their internal body clocks. This is an easy and effective way to bring wellness into a space.
The conference participants also highlighted the way technology is continually opening new doors to how wellness can be brought into the bathroom. Consumers are increasingly demanding technology that not only makes them feel good but provides a complete experience in the bathroom. Bathrooms have become a sanctuary and a place where consumers can invest in themselves.
The panellists said the best place to experiment with technological advancements is in the bathroom since it is an intimate space that is easier to remodel. It is less invasive than investing in a whole kitchen or living room remodel. Global tourism and spas have inspired people to look for wellness experiences that they can take home and create in their personal spaces.
In summary, the conference on "the bathroom trends redefining wellness" dealt with how spending so much time in confined spaces during the pandemic has shifted people's perception of wellness. This has led to a more significant focus on bathroom interiors, and customers are asking for more personalised and considered design so they can create sanctuaries for themselves and their families.

CLAB Architects presents LUXURIANT RELICS, A Tower of Vertical Nature, a micro art museum situated on the lake at Yugeng Yueyun Art Park in Foshan City, China.
