Impact of PCI DSS 4.0 on Cloud Infrastructure Security for Financial Services

  • The PCI DSS 4.0 has introduced several changes that impact cloud infrastructure security for financial services, promoting a proactive and flexible approach to safeguarding payment data. The changes include a customized approach to implementing security controls, enhanced requirements for multi-factor authentication, expanded use of encryption and key management, and regular risk assessments and continuous monitoring.
  • Financial institutions and cloud service providers share responsibility for securing the infrastructure in cloud environments. PCI DSS 4.0 requires organizations to clearly understand and document the shared responsibility model, specifying which security controls are managed by the CSP and which are handled by the organization itself.
  • The framework emphasizes the need for secure configuration management and automated monitoring tools to maintain compliance. Infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tools can be used to enforce secure configurations across cloud environments and detect any unauthorized changes in real-time, while automated compliance checks ensure consistently fulfilling the security requirements.
  • As financial services increasingly adopt modern cloud-native architectures like containers and serverless computing, PCI DSS 4.0's updated guidelines require securing these environments. This means implementing runtime security, vulnerability scanning, access controls, managing permissions, and securing the code to limit access to sensitive data.
  • PCI DSS 4.0 places a strong emphasis on logging, monitoring, and incident response to detect security incidents in the cloud. All logs related to payment data access, administrative activities, and cloud configuration changes should be securely stored and monitored for suspicious activity. Incident response procedures must be established to address potential security breaches quickly and effectively.
  • Achieving compliance with PCI DSS 4.0 in a cloud environment poses challenges for financial services firms. However, organizations can overcome them by adopting best practices such as implementing CSPM tools, regularly updating cloud security policies and training employees about new procedures, leveraging encryption and tokenization, and collaborating with CSPs for shared responsibility models.
  • Addressing the updates proactively can enhance organizations' security posture, minimize the risk of data breaches, and maintain compliance in a complex, evolving cloud landscape.

Learning AWS - DVA - Day 1: EBS (Elastic Block Storage)

  • EBS (Elastic Block Storage) is a network drive that can be attached to an instance on AWS.
  • EBS Volumes persist data and can be attached/detached from an instance as required.
  • Snapshots are point-in-time copies of data and can be used for disaster recovery, migration & backups.
  • EBS Snapshots Archive stores EBS backups in a cost-effective manner while retaining important data.
  • Fast Snapshot Restore (FSR) allows quick restoration of EBS Volumes from Snapshots in critical scenarios.
  • EBS Volumes come in 6 types categorized by size, throughput & IOPS with varying costs and performance.
  • General Purpose SSD (gp2/gp3) offers cost-effective storage with low-latency and burstable IOPS.
  • Provisioned IOPS (PIOPS) SSD is for critical business applications that need a lot of IOPS.
  • Hard Disk Drives (HDD) volumes are used for infrequently accessed data with throughput up to 500MB/s and IOPS 250.
  • EBS Volumes are locked to a specific Availability Zone (AZ) and can only be attached to instances within the same AZ.

AI marketing is a con - especially when it comes to CPUs

  • Artificial intelligence is the buzzword these days for most of the tech companies, and they are stuffing its various iterations into their latest products, all in the aim of encouraging us to buy their hardware.
  • The latest generation of CPUs launched by the likes of AMD, Intel, etc. have AI slapped onto everything regardless of whether or not it’s actually adding anything useful to a product.
  • CPU performance, when it comes to AI, is insignificant and irrelevant. AI demands parallel processing performance like nothing else, and nothing does that better than a graphics card right now.
  • The vast majority of popular AI tools today require cloud computing to fully function, making it impossible to run them on a local machine.
  • The one significant exception to this rule is localized upscaling and super-sampling, such as Nvidia’s DLSS and Intel’s XeSS.
  • Lot of fuss is being made about AI, apart from Nvidia that has installed 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs in xAI’s latest AI training system.
  • AI adds a lot of potency, but outcomes are entirely dependent on how it’s manipulated, managed, and regulated.
  • AI performance is insignificant on a CPU, to the point of being seriously irrelevant.
  • Despite the hype surrounding AI, majority of the AI tools popular today require cloud computing to fully function on a machine.
  • Localized upscaling and super-sampling such as Nvidia’s DLSS and Intel’s XeSS are good examples of AI tools that can be run on a machine, but you're essentially out of luck if you want to use AI to enhance most other tasks such as Adobe’s Generative Fill or ChatGPT.

DevOps from 0 to Hero - for Freshers

  • DevOps is a transformative culture and set of practices that bring together software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) to shorten the development lifecycle, deliver continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), and ensure high software quality.
  • To get started on your journey to becoming a DevOps engineer, first, you need to understand the basics of DevOps, including its core principles, such as Continuous Integration (CI), Continuous Delivery (CD), Infrastructure as Code (IaC), Microservices Architecture, and Monitoring and Logging.
  • Learn the foundation skills, including Basic Programming, Operating Systems, and Networking Basics, to automate tasks and scripts.
  • Dive into Version Control with Git and GitHub, that allows multiple developers to work on a project simultaneously without conflicts.
  • Master Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) with Jenkins and GitLab CI/CD for automating the entire DevOps lifecycle.
  • Explore Configuration Management with Ansible and Puppet, that helps automate the provisioning and management of infrastructure.
  • Understand Containerization and Orchestration with Docker for developing, shipping, and running applications inside containers. Kubernetes automates the deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications.
  • Explore Cloud Platforms like AWS (Amazon Web Services), Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and learn Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform.
  • Implement Monitoring and Logging with Prometheus and ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) to track application performance and quickly identify issues.
  • Get Hands-On Experience by applying what you've learned by working on real projects like building a complete CI/CD pipeline for an application, deploying a microservices architecture on Kubernetes, or implementing a multi-cloud disaster recovery solution.

Your Current Backup Automation Is Missing the Key: Ansible, AWS S3, and Cron 🔑

  • Enhance your current backup automation process by automating critical files & app data's backup to AWS S3 using Ansible and set up Cron Jobs for scheduling.
  • Follow the given steps to install and configure the necessary components: AWS Account, AWS CLI, Ansible, Python and Boto3, Ansible Collections, and Cron.
  • You can verify your S3 Bucket to list and read objects, create S3 Bucket via AWS CLI, install Ansible on Linux Server, and add policy permissions for IAM user or role.
  • Create two playbooks: Backup to AWS S3 - compresses a directory, uploads the tarball to S3 bucket, and Restore from AWS S3 - downloads the backup files and restores to the initial directory location.
  • Manually run the playbooks before setting up a Cron job to ensure you get the expected results. Verify that the files are uploaded to and restored from AWS S3.
  • Finally, set up the Cron Job by opening the Crontab file for editing, adding a Cron job line for Ansible backup playbook, and verifying the update through the 'crontab -l' command.
  • Ensure that necessary permissions are set for both S3 bucket and local file system to avoid any access issues during the restore process.
  • You can check out the Ansible playbook repository in Git to access and utilize scripts effectively.
