[Opinion] I’ve passed an AWS cert… but is this something for me?

The author passed the AWS Solutions Architect Associate examination after three months of preparation, but feels incomplete and unsatisfied.
The author had two main reasons for getting the certification: to get familiar with AWS services and improve their resume.
Preparing for the certification required memorizing many AWS services that the author may never use in the future.
Most of the exam questions presented real-world scenarios, making it difficult for the author, an application developer, who hasn’t had extensive experience with AWS.
The author realizes that their lack of experience in AWS made preparing for the certification difficult.
The official guide of the certification recommends this certification to those who have more than one year of hands-on experience in AWS.
The author suggests gaining more experience with AWS services first before getting the AWS SAA certification.
The certification is worth obtaining, but it does not prove that one can actually solve real-world problems. One should keep learning and practicing to gain new skills and knowledge.

C2PA, an industry initiative aimed at combating disinformation and deepfakes is working on enabling transparency about AI-generated content and providing a way for publishers, creators, and consumers to verify content provenance and authenticity.

If AMD lets Nvidia run rampant, we’re all in trouble

AMD is reportedly sitting out of the high-end gaming race this generation, and it’s bad news for Nvidia fans.
The graphics processing unit (GPU) market is at risk of slipping into unhealthy territory.
This is due to the rivalry between AMD and Nvidia cooling down.
Nvidia is slowly chipping away at AMD’s market share, currently holding 88% of the GPU market.
AMD has no plans for a high-end RDNA 4 graphics card, leaving Nvidia to monopolize the high-end graphics card market.
If Nvidia charges $2,000–$2,500 for the RTX 5090, there’ll be less of an incentive to keep prices reasonable.
This could result in crazy pricing across the entire stack and affect those who want to buy an RTX 5080.
AMD has done it before and it can do it again, but the GPU market needs more than just Nvidia to thrive.
To stay healthy, the market needs more competition and pressure from AMD could’ve helped.
We’ll likely find out more during CES 2025 in January.

Discord is firing back against MapleStory devs over copyright infringement and users are caught in the crossfire

South Korean video game maker Nexon Korea Corporation is attempting to obtain the data of copyright infringers on Discord, a popular online service provider for real-time communication.
Discord is fighting Nexon Korea Corporation in the name of user privacy and free speech rights, claiming that Nexon has no qualms about using the US court system to pursue copyright infringement suspects.
Back in 2023, Discord was forced to walk changes to its privacy policy when it first introduced AI integration into its servers including Clyde, AutoMod AI, Conversation Summarizes, Avatar Remix, and more.
Discord is now embroiled in a legal battle with Nexon Korea Corporation over the latter demanding the former continue to hand over data of users suspected of online copyright infringement.
Discord asserts that it’s already complied with a previous order made back in October 2023, but Nexon returned in May 2024 with a new subpoena requiring Discord to disclose the information of roughly two dozen alleged copyright infringers related to the MapleStory game.
There’s also the impact that this could have on online service providers and their own compliance with such DMCA subpoena cases, and this creates natural friction between providers and their users who may not feel secure using the online service after user data is disclosed under subpoena.
The results of this case have far-reaching consequences for what companies can demand of online service providers, how much or little will users actually be protected in these cases, and whether online service providers are required to comply with these demands.
Discord hasn’t had the best relationship with user privacy in the past. Back in 2024, four billion Discord chats, and made by roughly 620 million users, logged into more than 14,000 servers had been harvested by a site called Spy.pet and set to be auctioned off to the highest bidders.
Discord initially resisted, but both parties reached an agreement to confidentially disclose basic subscriber information concerning a total of 64 Discord user IDs.
Nexon filed a motion to compel at the Texas federal court just last week, asking the court to enter an order requiring Discord to produce the requested user data.
