Defending against popular cyberattack techniques in 2024
- Kaspersky experts report that attackers repeat a handful of cyberattack techniques to cause significant damage to companies.
- The most commonly used techniques observed by Kaspersky, based on the ATT&CK framework, are: exploiting public-facing applications, phishing, brute forcing, trusted relationships, command and scripting interpreter, account manipulation, exploitation of remote services, and launching system services.
- To protect against these techniques, Kaspersky recommends measures such as updating software at the network perimeter, using additional security measures for perimeter services, implementing phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication, and applying stricter policies to accounts where MFA cannot be enabled.
- Kaspersky also advises that companies prioritize closing control ports to external access, regularly scan the external perimeter for vulnerabilities, revoke outdated permissions, and apply network segmentation to restrict external contractors.
- Furthermore, companies should use security tools like EDR agents, SIEM, and XDR to detect anomalous user actions.
- Kaspersky also mentions the use of legitimate IT administration tools called LOLBins by attackers to blend in with normal network activity and avoid detection.
- To protect from such attacks, companies can use XDR or EDR systems that can track abnormal behavior, configure policies to restrict low-privileged users from launching privileged services and installing system software.
- Limiting the number of login attempts, blocking accounts on exceeding attempts and implementation of password polices is advised to prevent brute force attacks.
- The company also advises conducting training sessions and raising awareness among all company employees, and using the latest security solutions for mail servers and deploying EMM/UEM solutions to protect employees’ mobile devices.
- Finally, Kaspersky advises companies to update client and server applications promptly, disable unnecessary services on all computers, and use security solutions that can detect and block attempts to exploit vulnerabilities.

Injured employee can’t be forced to go to empanelled hospital: Kerala HC to FCI
- The Kerala High Court has ruled that an injured employee cannot be forced to go to an empanelled hospital by their employer.
- The court upheld the order of the Kozhikode Industrial Tribunal and Employees’ Compensation Commissioner, which directed Food Corporation of India (FCI) to reimburse the medical expenses of an employee, PT Rajeevan.
