What did a medieval peasant’s raw, sour breath sound like? Manor Lords’ composers tell us

  • Manor Lords’ soundtrack combines improvisational elements to capture the folk traditions of the medieval period with real instrument players and authentic sounds.
  • Music composers Daniel Caleb and Elben Schutte from Pressure Cooker Studios worked in close collaboration with Manor Lords’ creator Greg Styczeń to develop the game’s sound-track.
  • Inspiration for the soundtrack came from existing, historical choral chants from the 12th to 14th centuries which were reconstructed and mixed with new compositions.
  • One challenge faced by the music composers was determining how to find the right balance between modern sound engineering and authentic, uneven medieval sounds.
  • Composers also focused on capturing the sense of the average medieval person's perception of sacred music which was vital to that community.
  • The music wasn't all about church and sacred music. Composers also tried to capture everyday life and created songs that represented this feeling.
  • Success of the game has been surreal to the music composers, and they're excited about what the future brings.
  • The Manor Lords’ digital soundtrack is now available to purchase from Laced Records.
