Apple October Mac event: everything we expect to be announced

Apple's September's iPhone 16 launch event was full of new devices, but multiple rumors suggest a second event in October.
Apple's October events are usually hosted on a Monday or Tuesday, and the dates for this year's event center around October 14 or 15 or October 28 or 29.
The MacBook Pro is expected to be updated with M4 and M4 Max chips, but design changes aren't expected, and an OLED MacBook Pro won't be seen until 2026 at the earliest.
The Mac mini is set to receive a new look at Apple's October event and move to USB-C ports and include an M4 and M4 Pro chips.
The iMac is expected to receive an M4 chip, and we might see a new Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad with USB-C charging ports.
The new iPad mini could come with new colors, better cameras, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and a faster chip alongside the entry-level iPad.
Other products that are unlikely to be unveiled on stage include the Mac Studio, Mac Pro, MacBook Air, upgrades to the AirTags tracker, and a new Apple TV box.
The new Mac Studio is probably to debut around the middle of 2025, while the Mac Pro should be updated before the end of the year.
The MacBook Air is likely to be upgraded in spring 2025, but the M3 MacBook Air launched in March 2024.
New iPhone SE, AirTags tracker upgrades, and a new Apple TV box aren't expected to be seen at the October event.

The AltStore Team marked the fifth anniversary of the release of AltStore Classic with the rollout of AltStore version 2.0.
AltStore v2.0 includes a long list of bug fixes as well as new users that port over some of the AltStore PAL platform's key features.
AltStore users will immediately notice that the Browse tab has been redesigned to include handy new features like the ability to view recently updated apps with streamlined card-like interfaces.
The update now allows sources to add any third-party source in addition to existing Recommended Sources.
AltStore ensures that users always know what they're downloading by letting them review important permissions before sideloading apps.
AltStore users can also donate to developers' Patreons and download Patreon-exclusive apps within the app itself.
AltStore has increased image caching to reduce the frequency of refetches, added follow buttons to social media, and updated its app icon.
Existing AltStore users can download version 2.0 directly from within the app, while new users will automatically install version 2.0 upon trying to install the app via AltServer.
AltStore v2.0 is compatible with all iOS and iPadOS firmware versions, whether they're jailbroken or not.
Users can browse apps by source or by eight categories and choose alternate app icons in the app's settings.

Nintendo’s Palworld Lawsuit: Everything You Need to Know

Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair, Inc. for patent infringement, claiming Palworld has copied key elements from Pokémon.
No evidence supported the claim that some Pals were altered copies of Pokémon designs, and no lawsuit followed.
The lawsuit seeks an injunction against infringement and compensation for damages on the grounds that Palworld infringes multiple patent rights.
Nintendo believes that Palworld uses game mechanics, systems, or features that closely resemble those patented by Nintendo from Pokémon games.
Patenting game mechanics and systems limits creativity, restricts developers, and stifles the evolution of gaming genres.
Pocketpair is unaware of specific patents that are the part of Nintendo lawsuit.
Pocketpair has not yet been informed of the specific patents involved in the lawsuit at the time of the announcement.
The potential outcome of the lawsuit is that if no settlement is reached out of court, Pocketpair will likely be forced to adjust any systems or mechanics found to infringe upon Nintendo’s patents and could face significant financial penalties.
Many find this lawsuit unreasonable, arguing that patenting mechanics, systems, and features should not be allowed.
Given Nintendo’s well-known aggressive stance on protecting its intellectual property, it comes as no surprise that they took legal action in this case.

Most desktops today have an option to “disable touch while typing”. But if you always have your computer with a mouse connected and rarely use the touchpad, then it can be a good choice to disable the touchpad to avoid mis-operation.
Option 1: Disable Touchpad using System Settings
For GNOME, simply open Settings, then navigate to Mouse & Keyboard in left.
For XFCE, simply search for and launch “Mouse and Touchpad” from start menu.
MATE desktop users can search and launch the “Mouse” utility.
And KDE Plasma users may search and launch “Touchpad” from start menu.
Option 2: Single Command to Disable Touchpad (Xorg only)
If your desktop does not provide such toggle option to disable/enable touchpad, then you may run the commands below instead.

Virtual Machines are heavyweight deployment options that run as full-blown computers with virtual hardware, their own operating system (OS), and are ideal for scenarios where you need to run multiple OSes on the same machine.
Docker containers, on the other hand, are lightweight and do not require full OS and virtual hardware, reduces overhead, offer faster startup times and are ideal for agile and scalable cloud-native apps.
If you need strong isolation, especially between different operating systems, go with virtual machines while Docker is more suitable for speed, portability, and scalability.
Larger organizations often use both tools, depending on the individual situation as both are incredibly useful when utilized with proper understanding and requirements of an application.
Virtual machines need complex setup, including configuring the OS, installing dependencies, and managing virtual hardware, while Docker simplifies the process of packaging and deploying apps using Docker files to define dependencies.
VMs consume more system resources and come with higher overhead that impacts performance while Docker containers are lightweight, scalable and offer process-level isolation.
Example use cases for virtual machines include needing strong isolation between environments and running apps that require different OSes. Docker, on the other hand, is ideal for microservices architecture and modern cloud-native apps.
Full OS-level isolation and more resource consumption gives VMs an edge when it comes to heavy isolation, but Docker wins in scalability and portability.
Both Docker and Virtual Machines are reliable tools, and the right choice depends on personal requirements. Docker is fast, portable, and scalable, while VMs offer greater isolation and the ability to run applications requiring different OSes.
Understanding an application's needs will guide whether to choose VMs or Docker for deployment.
