Ubuntu Blog: 5G mobile networks: A driver for edge computing

  • A report from Canonical and Omdia states that communication service providers (CSPs) are confident about the future of edge computing on telco networks and cites 5G as the enabler of wide-spread adoption. CSPs seek cost reduction and an opportunity for revenue growth and edge computing presents an opportunity. Edge computing increases performance and quality of experience by reducing the distance between a user application and the end-user. In addition, stand-alone 5G networks are essential for 5G edge computing which will require further deployment of edge clouds and will be driven by 5G's ability to deliver performance levels required by different types of business services.
  • The survey conducted in the report also reveals that more than 60% of respondents have less than 30 nodes available for edge applications, showing limitations within the system. With edge computing capabilities delivered to all sites hosted across hundreds of edge clouds, CSPs will require an infrastructure which can host various types of business services, therefore, edge computing and 5G are both key components of that infrastructure.
  • Private mobile networks (PMN) have a lot in common with edge computing and will benefit from what 5G can provide on a cloud-native infrastructure. PMNs are expected to enhance user experience and enterprise's that deploy a PMN are keen to combine it with edge computing which is viewed as one of the most requested add-ons to private networks. According to the report, 34% of the survey respondents say that they also acquired an edge computing solution besides their private mobile network.
  • Aether is a Linux Foundation project aimed at delivering open-source private mobile networking software for everyone. Deploying and operating complex software like Aether is not a challenge with Juju software orchestration engine, which provides automation in software lifecycle management with enterprise-grade software operators. Charmed Aether SD-Core is a set of charms that can be used to easily deploy Aether’s SD-Core 5G core network on Kubernetes as a cloud-native mobile core.
  • 5G requires a suitable cloud-native infrastructure to run on. As more edge clouds are required to host edge computing applications, cost-effective deployments with carrier-grade software are essential. Private mobile networks based on 5G will also benefit from 5G's enhanced data rates, reduced latency, and support for various traffic types. Canonical’s Charmed Aether SD-Core provides an open-source 5G core network that runs on a cloud-native infrastructure, providing enterprises with a cost-effective and simple way to run their private mobile network.
