Apple iMac M4: news, rumors, and everything we know

Apple iMac M4 could be announced at the Apple event later this month if rumors are to be believed.
There's no release date for iMac M4 but it could launch in late 2024 or sometime in 2025.
M4 MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac are reportedly on track for 2024 launch.
If iMac M4 releases then it could be outfitted with at least an M4 chip, with a RAM upgrade to at least 16 GB.
It's expected to be powered by more sophisticated chip and with upgraded specs on the entry-level configuration.
The iMac refresh might include a screen larger than the current 24-inch M3 display.
Apple might announce the iMac M4 at the event or surprise everyone with a stealth launch.
There's still no official confirmation of Apple’s announcement, and it's best to sit tight and wait for the official announcement.
If iMac M4 releases this year, it will have at least 8GB of RAM, 256GB SSD storage, a 10-core CPU, a 10-core GPU, and a 38 TOPS NPU.
The M4 iMac's memory and storage could get an upgrade to at least 16 GB and 512 GB, respectively.

ChatGPT's new 'Canvas' is the AI collaborator you didn't know you needed

OpenAI recently launched a new feature called 'Canvas', which offers editable page for shared cooperation.
ChatGPT can mimic human collaborator in Edit or provide feedback on particular parts of text and code selected.
Canvas opens in a separate window, allowing users to work on the ideas side by side.
This feature operates on a separate page from the chatbot window, where you can ask the AI to write a blog post and code mobile app feature.
GPT-4o model powers Canvas for now only available to ChatGPT Plus and team subscribers.
Canvas will soon be open to Enterprise and Education clients as well, and will be made available to free-tier ChatGPT clients once the beta stage is complete.
ChatGPT can suggest edits, adjust length, change reading levels, and offer inline feedback in Canvas.
Canvas centers on text and is a lot like a text version of editing tools for AI-produced images made with OpenAI's DALL-E models.
Canvas is the first major update to ChatGPT’s visual interface since it launched two years ago.
Canvas offers narrowly focused editing and suggestions and will likely be a huge boon to more legitimate pursuits, such as providing assistance for complex code or long-form text.

Has Generative AI ruined the re:Invent experience?

Generative AI has become the dominant topic at AWS’s re:Invent conference, to the detriment of other fields. The AI/ML category alone makes up 34% of this year’s 2,378 sessions. Most other categories have suffered significant declines since 2022. The trend towards AI-focused content has increased significantly in recent years, from 417 sessions in 2022 to 820 in 2024. Disproportionate focus on a single topic means Network and Storage professionals may be less likely to attend.
The steep decline in several technical fields is alarming: Architecture category saw a 23% decrease, Cloud Operations decreased by 43%, Networking decreased by 107%, Storage also decreased by 107%, and Customer Enablement and Hybrid Cloud decreased by a staggering 172% and 156% respectively.
Some of the drop-offs may be attributed to AWS’s penchant for offering similar sessions. They have mislabeled several topics like DevOps and Kubernetes under AI category. These lopsided offerings indicate that AWS has shifted its focus to keep pace with demands of AI developers.
Despite falloff in traditionally popular subjects, AWS has retained its hold on the industry because the event delivers high-quality technical content that offers networking opportunities.
However, developers have expressed concern over heightened focus on generative AI that may be excluding other technical fields essential to building and working in cloud computing.
Although some have pointed out that AWS is merely responding to increasing demand for AI resources, it has left customers who aren’t necessarily building AI-powered systems frustrated and out of relevant sessions.
The disproportionate focus on AI reflects a wider trend at technology conferences in North America, where data sciences and AI-related topics dominate conversations.
Experts warn that the trend towards AI-focused sessions may have a financial impact on businesses operating in AWS’s cloud. Many companies don’t engage AI-related services, and the conference offers little value to attendees who aren't building AI-powered systems.
Though the conference will still offer quality technical insights, AWS and organizers need to take steps to address the lack of session mix from multiple technical fields for the upcoming years.
The event costs about $2,000 to attend, and organizers assert that it offers world-class technical sessions that provide networking opportunities. However, critics believe the recent changes in session content at re:Invent indicate a shift in focus to keep up with demands of AI developers.

What is a CPU? Here’s everything you need to know

A CPU, which stands for 'central processing unit,' is responsible for processing and executing instructions and acts as the brains of computer devices.
CPUs are made by arranging billions of microscopic transistors onto a single computer chip which enable the CPU to perform the computations necessary for executing programs stored in the system's memory.
At its core, a CPU takes instructions from a program or application and performs a calculation via three key stages: fetch, decode, and execute.
Clock speed is prominently advertised when looking at CPUs, but it's not the whole picture regarding performance. A faster clock speed means a faster processor, but a newer model's more advanced underlying silicon will deliver significantly more work than an older processor with a faster clock speed.
Your CPU isn't as important for overall system performance as it once was, but it still plays a major role in the response and speed of a computing device, and without it, the device wouldn't work at all.
Gamers will generally find a benefit from higher clock speeds, while more serious work such as CAD and video editing will see an improvement from a higher CPU core count.
Entry-level processors today have between two and four cores, while six to eight cores is more mainstream in gaming devices and PCs.
High-end models can have anywhere up to 32 cores, and professional hardware can go beyond that. Many processors also employ a technology called simultaneous multi-threading.
AMD does something similar with its Ryzen CPUs, while Intel and AMD both offer CPUs with graphics chips and memory stored on them, meaning they can do more than just standard CPU functions.
To minimize costs, it's possible to avoid the latest hardware and instead stick to a recent generation of CPU. Unless you’re a hardcore gamer or someone looking to edit videos, you don’t need to spend more than $200 to $300.
