Google Cloud beefs up database services for generative AI workloads

Google Cloud is enhancing its database services in order to better support generative AI applications.
AlloyDB, Google's fully managed PostgreSQL-compatible database service, is integrating Google Search and YouTube's ScaNN vector index to provide vector search capabilities, which make it useful to develop generative AI applications.
Memorystore for Valkey is updated, providing fully managed in-memory, data caching, streaming and message brokers alongside Google's Memorystore for Redis Cluster managed services, to support rapid vector search.
Firebase Data Connect is unveiled as the first relational database service designed to work with the Firebase application development platform. Later this month, it will launch in public preview mode, and supports features such as rich queries, complex conditions and semantic vector search to power advanced generative AI applications for Android, iOS, web and Flutter.
Cloud Spanner, a hybrid database that can store relational and semistructured data, is added to the company's database centre as a supported database alongside the Cloud SQL and AlloyDB databases. Database Centre launched earlier this year, enabling IT administrators to manage fleets of databases side-by-side.
Google Cloud will expand availability to include a new South America East (Sao Paulo) region, joining its existing regions in US East (Ashburn), US West (Salt Lake City), UK South (London), and Germany Central (Frankfurt).
Google plans to more than double the number of regions that support Oracle Database@Google Cloud by the end of next year. The modernized version of Oracle's iconic database runs on Google's cloud infrastructure and is enhanced with features that make it more suitable for generative AI applications.
