ASUS Zenbook S14 review: A showpiece for Intel’s Lunar Lake AI PC chips

ASUS Zenbook S14 is one of the first laptops with Intel's Core Ultra 7 258V processor from the company’s Lunar Lake lineup.
The Zenbook S14 delivers the best battery life – 16 hours and 8 minutes – among Intel laptops.
The laptop is built with a material ASUS calls 'Ceraluminum', which makes it sturdy and elegant.
The Zenbook S14 also features a 14-inch 3K OLED display, Thunderbolt 4 USB-C connections, a full-sized HDMI 2.1 port, a headphone jack, and a Windows Hello-compatible webcam.
However, the laptop's quad-speaker audio system may not provide depth and detail at higher volumes.
The Zenbook S14 scored almost the same as the Surface Laptop 7 for Business, which uses the last-gen Core Ultra 7 165H.
The laptop's multithreaded performance is slightly lower than AMD's Ryzen AI on heavier tasks.
The Zenbook S14 leans more on efficiency than raw power.

Future Data Driven 2024 – introduction to vector databases

Vector databases use vector embeddings to represent data in the form of vectors and store these embeddings in databases.
Cosine similarity allows an accurate evaluation of similarity between two vectors, which helps categorize unstructured data.
The use of Pinecone, vector databases and python implementations can help demonstrate how vectors are stored, managed and searched for unstructured data.
Several techniques are used to create vector embeddings, such as Word2Vec, GloVe, and BERT that generate contextual embeddings.
Tree-based indexing, approximate nearest neighbors, and quantization are methods used for indexing vectors in vector databases.
Vectors are multi-dimensional and can be confusing when described using the initial notation. This is overcome by introducing a new notation.
Cosine similarity is calculated by evaluating the cosine of the angle between two vectors and can range from -1 to 1.
Azure, AI, CosmosDB, Co-Pilot, Database Watcher were covered during Future Data Driven 2024 event.
Vector databases index vectors with the help of cosine similarity, making it easier to search for similarities between unstructured data.
Pinecone is a vector database that is designed to store, manage, and search vectors for similarity search operations and analysis of unstructured data.

Apple finally has a chance to fix the Vision Pro. Here’s what it needs to do

Apple's mixed reality headset, Vision Pro, is reportedly struggling and selling poorly.
According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple has a few ideas on how to revive the device.
However, only a couple of Gurman's suggestions, such as introducing a cheaper Vision Pro model, seem relevant.
Gurman speculates that Apple could also integrate the headset's features into a new set of smart glasses, or create AirPods with external cameras to interpret the world for the user.
There are parallels between Vision Pro's current situation and that of Apple's original HomePod: both expensive items without cheaper alternatives.
A cheaper sibling device is required to give people an easier route into the ecosystem and for the product to have a broader appeal.
Apple is reportedly developing a more affordable Vision Pro model which would help offset sales challenges and competition from rivals like Microsoft and Meta.
A reset with a more affordable Vision Pro model could help Apple avoid stagnation and gain a competitive edge.
Apple's failure to introduce a cheaper HomePod option initially eventually led to a reboot of the product line.

History of quantum computing: 12 key moments that shaped the future of computers

The idea of quantum computing was introduced by American physicist Paul Benioff in 1980 when he proposed a quantum version of Turing machine using the equations of quantum mechanics.
The famous physicist Richard Feynman is often credited with popularizing quantum computing with his speech on using computers to simulate physics at the first Physics of Computation Conference in 1981.
David Deutsch pointed out in 1985 that because the universal computer described by Turing relied on classical physics, it would be unable to simulate a quantum computer. He formulated Turing's work using the principles of quantum mechanics to create a Universal quantum computer.
In 1991, American mathematician Peter Shor introduced the first killer use case for quantum computers: a quantum algorithm that could efficiently factorize large numbers.
Bell Labs computer scientist Lov Grover proposed a quantum algorithm for unstructured search in 1996. The Grover algorithm uses the quantum phenomenon of superposition to speed up the search process.
IBM researcher Isaac Chuang and his team made a breakthrough by implementing Grover's algorithm on a computer featuring two qubits in 1998. They also led the first implementation of Shor's algorithm three years later on a seven-qubit processor.
In 1999, physicists at Japanese technology company NEC used superconducting circuits to create qubits, which are now used by many of the leading quantum computing companies, including Google and IBM.
D-Wave, a Canadian company, launched the first commercially available quantum computer, D-Wave One, in May 2011. The device featured 128 superconducting qubits but was not a universal quantum computer.
IBM made its five-qubit processor available over the cloud in May 2016, allowing people from outside the company to run quantum computing jobs on its hardware.
Google claimed to achieve quantum supremacy in September 2019 when it used 53 qubits to perform a calculation in 200 seconds that it claimed would take a supercomputer roughly 10,000 years to complete.
A group from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other institutions showed in 2022 that Google’s claim was overstated by devising a classical algorithm that could simulate Google’s quantum operations in just 15 hours on 512 GPU chips.
In 2023, Harvard researchers working with start-up QuEra achieved a major milestone by generating 48 logical qubits at once – 10 times more than anyone had previously achieved.
