Two of the best Apple Intelligence features on Mac still need work

  • Apple recently launched the macOS Sequoia 15.1 beta, introducing a host of new Apple Intelligence features.
  • The Mail app's Summarize feature is used for summing up content but has several annoyances that prevent it from being a must-have tool.
  • Mail summaries are slow and the text is very small and easy to miss, needs improvement.
  • The Writing Tools suite is more encouraging though not without its quirks.
  • Proofread tool needs to show the changes it's making to the text and why.
  • Apple needs to work on its presentation to make Writing Tools indispensable.
  • Apple Intelligence still feels years behind what Google and OpenAI are producing right now.

Microsoft explains how Windows 11’s controversial Recall feature is now ready for release – it’s coming to Copilot+ PCs in November

  • Microsoft plans to launch Windows 11’s Recall feature on Copilot+ laptops in November.
  • Recall is a supercharged AI-powered search in Windows 11 that leverages snapshots of the activity on your PC.
  • The Recall feature will be strictly opt-in, as opposed to the default-on approach when it was first unveiled.
  • Snapshots – and other Recall-related data – will be fully encrypted, and Windows Hello authentication will be a requirement to use the feature.
  • Recall will use a secure environment called a Virtualization-based Security Enclave, or VBS Enclave, which is a fully secure virtual machine isolated from the Windows 11 system, that only the user can access.
  • Microsoft has made clear that all Recall data is kept locally on your machine, and none of it is sent to the cloud.
  • Recall is a Copilot+ PC exclusive because it needs a powerful NPU for acceleration and local processing for Recall to work responsively there.
  • Other privacy tightening measures include the ability to exclude specific apps or websites from ever having snapshots taken by Recall.
  • Recall is returning to testing in October, and if all goes well, will release to Copilot+ PCs in November
  • Recall will still be marked as in ‘preview’ and it’s debatable whether you should be taking the plunge with an ability like this when it’s not quite fully finished.

Open Distributed Processing: Unplugged!

  • Open Distributed Processing (ODP) is a framework for specifying systems, whether distributed or not.
  • ODP’s goal is to make it so that programmers and end-users should not need to be concerned with the nature and means of distribution.
  • ODP transparencies provide uniformity and a simplified view of the system for end-users and developers.
  • ODP provides the means to create an interaction with a service, and invoke it.
  • The ODP viewpoints provide an orderly way to specify distributed systems and help tame the complexity involved.
  • ODP is a set of standards produced by ISO/IEC and ITU-T, and caters for interworking in heterogeneous environments and portability across heterogeneous systems.
  • ODP provides traders to find a set of services which fulfill the desired outcome of the user.
  • ODP Reference Model, which is defined in a four-part standard, provides a framework for the development of other standards.
  • ODP strives to be a minimalistic standard so that future innovations can take forms that are currently unthought of.
  • ODP is not in competition with other standards, such as Microsoft’s DCOM and OMG’s CORBA, as they all fit into the ODP framework very well.

GitLab, Azure, OpenTofu, and NO secrets!

  • Terraform can be used to deploy any resource from GitLab pipeline to Azure cloud without using any secrets.
  • OpenID Connect (OIDC) authentication is demonstrated through GitLab project gitlab-azure-oidc-opentofu, which creates a resource group in one of the Azure subscriptions.
  • OIDC technology works perfectly well with Terraform. OpenTofu is integrated into the component that is supported by GitLab.
  • Every job that requires authentication sets up environment variable TF_VAR_oidc_token and fills it with the token value to create OIDC token required by Terraform code.
  • Global variables of the pipeline are used to set up tenant_id, subscription_id, and client_id.
  • $AZURE_CLIENT_ID, $AZURE_TENANT_ID, and $AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID are GitLab CI/CD variables required for authentication.
  • An identifier of the Service Principal created to authenticate pipeline is called $AZURE_CLIENT_ID.
  • Federated Credentials must be created to allow pipeline to access Service Principal credentials without a shared secret.
  • Issuer: https://gitlab.com, Subject identifier: project_path:/:ref_type:branch:ref:, Audience: https://gitlab.com are provided in Federated Identity Credentials.
  • GitLab official Azure AD Federated Identity Credentials documentation and GitLab OpenTofu Component are useful resources for this implementation.
