Meta reveals Orion, its first fully holographic AR glasses and ‘neural interface’

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, unveiled a prototype for fully holographic AR glasses named Orion.
Orion is described as the most advanced glasses the world has ever seen and aims to be a normal, fashionable pair of glasses.
The holographic display doesn't use passthrough and overlays holograms onto the real physical world.
The glasses utilize AI with voice, hand-tracking, eye-tracking, and a wrist-based neural interface for interaction.

Nintendo jumps on AI images of Mario shared on X

Nintendo's copyright infringement hunter Tracer issued takedown notices to users who shared AI-generated images of Mario on X's Grok-2 AI model.
The AI-generated images of Mario depicted him engaging in activities that Nintendo would not approve of, such as smoking and drinking.
Tracer, which uses AI tools to identify copyright violations, sent DMCA notices to several users, including those who posted fan art of Mario.
It is unclear what instructions Nintendo has given to Tracer regarding copyright enforcement, but Nintendo may be aggressive in protecting its IP against AI-generated content.

Someone built a system with Intel’s first CPU that’s half a century old, and it can boot Linux – if you have a spare week to wait

A programmer named Dmitry Grinberg has managed to boot Linux on an Intel 4004 CPU, which was the first commercially produced microprocessor in the world.
The Intel 4004, released in 1971, is a 4-bit processor originally designed as a calculator chip.
Booting up Linux on the Intel 4004 took 4.76 days, and even a directory listing command took 16 hours.
Grinberg used a development board with the Intel 4004 processor, clock generator, RAM, a ROM controller, and performed emulation tricks and Linux optimizations to achieve this feat.

AMD vs. Intel: Who makes the best CPUs?

AMD and Intel are two of the most iconic names in PC building, and have been offering the fastest, most capable and most feature-rich processors for gamers, casual web browsers and professionals.
AMD brings competition to Intel with the launch of its Ryzen processors in 2017.
Both AMD and Intel compete with their latest designs with more cores, higher clocks, and new features, offering the greatest CPU performance in mainstream components.
AMD’s Ryzen 9000 and Intel’s 14th-generation Raptor Lake are the latest mainstream models.
The Intel Core i9-14900K has 24 cores and supports up to 32 threads, whereas the Ryzen 9 9950X uses a more traditional 16-core and 32-thread layout.

HP makes bold claims that it can improve your life with AI, but can they back them up?

HP hosted its HP Imagine 2024 event, debuting new AI-based technology and devices for launch in 2024 and into 2025. The OmniBook Ultra Flip - an impressive looking and lightweight 2-in-1 AI laptop was announced. EliteBook X was also revealed as the "most powerful" AI PC that features the "best in AI performance." Only 27% of workers are satisfied with their workspace, and HP's research shows that only 38% of workers used AI last year, which increased to 66% in 2024. Workers who use AI scored 11 points higher compared to non-AI users. HP and AI chatbot companies are unable to train their models on an individual's data to address data privacy and security concerns. HP Gen AI Lab is another feature that prevents "hallucinations" in AI datasets.
AI is used interchangeably between tools in daily life and evolutions and is far more controversial.
Safety, privacy, and security seem to be major concerns for HP, and it addresses them with its malware defense under the Wolf Security that's been made available to consumers with the latest laptops.
Sustainability is also a concern when using AI, and HP says that because the NPU handles most of the workload in AI use, it decreases the GPU and CPU's power consumption, making laptops more energy-efficient and sustainable.
By 2025, HP is striving to be 100% free from any single-use plastic in its product packaging and has used at least one billion tons of reclaimed ocean-bound plastic, reclaimed fishing nets, and used cooking oil to manufacture its products.
HP is striving towards and has made significant gains in various points of contention like sustainability, security, data set hallucinations, integrity, and daily life use. There is a real effort to ensure its AI policies and practices are as ethical as possible.
HP claims to use AI as a tool to partner with and aid, rather than being a replacement for people. It is focusing on the choice to be able to use AI locally, which is huge.
