Deploying SonarQube on AWS EC2 with Cloud Development Kit(CDK): Extending the Database to Amazon RDS PostgreSQL

  • In this article, the author demonstrated how to deploy a SonarQube Server on an EC2 instance with an external database such as Amazon RDS or Aurora instead of keeping the database self-hosted within the server.
  • The author explained why extending SonarQube's database to an external service like RDS or Aurora is beneficial, including scalability, reliability, security, and maintenance.
  • The infrastructure consists of components such as VPC, internet gateway, security group, EC2 instance, NAT gateway, RDS PostgreSQL database instance, IAM role, and Secret Manager.
  • The author also provided the code snippet for creating the database construct in CDK and highlighted how to allow communication between the database and EC2 instance server.
  • The stack update included the creation of a new user data script to connect to the external database and data migration.
  • Finally, the author showed how to deploy the stack using the CDK command line tools and concluded the article.
  • This article is a good reference guide for those who want to deploy a SonarQube Server on AWS with an external database such as RDS or Aurora.
  • The article also highlights the benefits of using an external database service rather than keeping it self-hosted within the server, including scalability, reliability, security, and maintenance.
  • The code snippet provided for creating the database construct in CDK is helpful for those who are new to AWS CDK.
  • The step-by-step instructions provided in the article make it easy to follow and deploy the stack on AWS.

I canceled my streaming services and built a Plex server — I’m never going back

  • A writer for Digital Trends realized that they were spending far too much money on streaming services every month, so they decided to build a Plex server instead. They did a lot of research and then chose a small, inexpensive PC with an Intel N100, 16GB of memory, and 500GB of storage. The machine was set up to run remotely, without a keyboard, mouse, or monitor.
  • One of the reasons Plex is a good choice is you can keep all the movies and TV-shows that you have. Rather than signing up for new streaming services, you can build a streaming library from movies and TV shows that you own. Converting all your physical media to digital is easier than before.
  • The PC runs Windows and Chrome Remote Desktop so he can control it from another device. To configure the PC, he had to bypass Windows' login screen to make sure the PC runs all the time and to eliminate and need for manual management. This allowed him to install and set up Plex on his new server.
  • There is a lot of set up required with a Plex, including mapping the network and configuring your server to stay live at all times. As the files can be large, the author used an 8TB external hard drive but emphasizes it's not the most reliable option for storing a large library. Furthermore, there are also security concerns when physically accessing the server, so learning SSH and setting up a RAID array can help improve security and reliability.
  • The author has rarely used another streaming service since setting up his Plex server, and he's very happy about it. They admit this isn't a perfect solution but a good starting point, especially if you want to save money and utilize content that you've already paid for.

Azure Data Factory Cost Optimization – Maximizing Efficiency and Minimizing Expenses

  • Azure Cost Optimization is crucial for organizations leveraging Microsoft Azure to ensure they are using cloud resources efficiently and maximizing the value of their investment.
  • Turbo360 helps monitor, analyse, and optimize Azure Data Factory costs by providing insights into spending patterns, setting thresholds, scheduling pipelines, and detecting cost anomalies.
  • ADF Pipeline triggers like Scheduled, Tumbling Window, and Event-Based Trigger incur additional costs depending on their frequency, type, and number of runs.
  • Each trigger execution results in a pipeline run and Azure charge per pipeline run, and the pipelines with multiple activities or complex workflows will cost more to execute.
  • Turbo360 empowers organizations to optimize their ADF workflows and reduce unnecessary spending, all while improving performance.
  • Costs arise from moving data between regions, data stores, and other services, as well as from pipeline orchestration and the use of self-hosted or Azure-hosted integration runtimes.
  • Optimize data movements with Turbo360 can help compare resource costs with different time ranges and provide clear insight to minimize data transfers.
  • Efficient Pipeline Scheduling with Turbo360 helps schedule pipelines during off-peak hours to take advantage of lower rates with the help of optimization schedules.
  • Cost Alerts and automatic anomaly detection with Turbo360 help set up alerts on budget thresholds and notify if there's a shift in the usage pattern and Azure Data factory cost.
  • Turbo360's automated insights help organizations ensure they're getting the most value from their Azure investment.

Cloud Collaboration Reimagined: Principal Engineer Mohan Sitaram on Maximizing Remote Work Efficiency in the Digital Era

  • Mohan Sitaram, a seasoned technical leader with over 13 years of experience in software development and testing for large-scale systems, shares his expert perspectives on the transformative impact of cloud technology on business operations, particularly in the context of remote work.
  • Cloud technologies have been a viable option for remote collaboration for years, however, the pandemic forced people in nearly every industry to rely on these tools as it was physically impossible to collaborate in person; this led to an increased reliance on SaaS companies like Zoom and Atlassian and their products.
  • The biggest advantage of cloud-based collaboration is that it enables distributed teams to function as a single unit and not as disconnected silos.
  • For technical software leads, using more than one tool to streamline collaboration is crucial to ensure success; e.g., project management software like JIRA coupled with a cloud-based DevOps platform like Gitlab or GitHub.
  • Remote collaboration is most effective when colleagues have the necessary resources and information to carry out their tasks and make optimal use of meetings; thus, meetings should be minimized, and focus shifted to asynchronous collaboration.
  • Collaborative engineering is made simpler with cloud infrastructure technologies such as Virtual Machines (VMs), Remote Desktops or Virtual Desktops, Containers, and Kubernetes which enable developers to build applications on a shared cluster of machines by using network protocols like SSH and HTTP.
  • Cloud providers like AWS and Microsoft Azure provide the core infrastructure for SaaS companies to build, run, and monitor their applications; cloud providers are skilled at handling lower-level requirements like speed, reliability, security, and application availability and provide easy-to-use APIs that application developers can leverage to build the application.
  • The key to successful remote collaboration is having a balance between SaaS services like Microsoft Teams, Slack, Zoom, and cloud services like VDI, that run in private data centers.
  • Generative AI is already being used in several domains to compose emails, documents, audio, and video. SaaS companies like Zoom are using AI in the form of smart assistants; companies might use generative AI to simplify the user experience by automatically generating meeting notes and summaries from a conference call, or producing software design diagrams and flowcharts for a future meeting provided a meeting agenda as input.
  • The adoption of AI by SaaS companies might accelerate productivity, simplify user experience by breaking linguistic barriers, and allow businesses to accelerate their growth beyond linguistic barriers.
