Data Tracking and Notifications in Core Data and SwiftData

  • In Core Data, the `prepareForDeletion` method is called when a managed object is about to be deleted, allowing for resource cleanup and relationship management.
  • However, these lifecycle methods are not triggered during batch operations or when specific managed object subclasses are not involved.
  • SwiftData, which uses Core Data as its default storage implementation, does not provide similar functionality to these notification timings.
  • Persistent History Tracking in Core Data and SwiftData does not include specific change information in the notification and developers need to retrieve the changes from the database manually.

How to use Apple Notes to share photos with friends and family

  • The Notes app can do many things, and we have a guide that lists over 30 tips for using it like a pro.
  • You can use the following three ways to share your photos and videos with other people: create a Shared Album and add members to it, turn your photo album into a public website accessible to anyone with the link and share a photo with an iCloud link.
  • The fundamentals of photo sharing via notes are simple. You have to share a note with your friends, family members, or office colleagues. Members can add images to this shared note, which will be visible to all participants.
  • Once the invitation is shared, ask that person to accept it.
  • Participants of the shared note will get an alert when you add photos, text, or make other changes to the note. They can tap the alert or go to the Shared section of the Notes app on their device to see this note and the photo you added.
  • Members can swipe right in the note body or tap the person icon and choose Show Highlights to see who added which photo or text.
  • Here are a few points that’ll help manage photo sharing through Notes: you can add more photos to the shared note or remove existing ones, you can touch and hold a photo to copy it, use the share option to save it to the Photos app, view it as a small thumbnail, or delete it.
  • You can also tap the three dots icon and use the Attachment View option to see all photos in small or large views.
  • If you no longer want to share the note, you can tap the person icon, followed by Manage Shared Note, and tap Stop Sharing.
  • On a related note: How to share iCloud Drive folders

Microsoft reportedly sabotaged Windows 95 and 98's Control Panel, or it looks that way – is this a worrying revelation?

  • Microsoft reportedly sabotaged Windows 95 and 98's Control Panel with a hard-coded 8 second delay when using the 'Add New Hardware' wizard.
  • The reason behind this delay is unclear, but it is speculated to be a workaround for hardware limitations at that time.
  • There are concerns about whether similar tactics were used in more modern operating systems like Windows 10 and Windows 11.
  • While Windows 9x versions are no longer relevant, the discovery raises questions about potential blunders in the legacy Control Panel that could affect Windows 11 users facing issues with the 24H2 update.

M4 vs. M3 MacBook Pro comparison: What’s different?

  • Apple's M4 MacBook Pro features subtle yet significant upgrades compared to its predecessor, the M3 MacBook Pro, including more power, a brighter display and longer battery life. The design is the same as in 2021, but the M4 is available in space black, whereas that finish was previously limited to M3 Pro/Max models. The M4 model features a 10-core CPU, four performance cores, six efficiency cores and a 10-core GPU. The base M4 chip now carries 16GB of unified memory and purchases come with 24GB of memory as standard. It is also possible to configure a MacBook Pro with up to 48GB memory versus the 36GB limit on M3 Pro models.
  • The display size and technology is the same as its M3 predecessor, but the ProMotion mini-LED panels offer improved peak SDR brightness of 1,000 nits, up from 600 nits on M3 models. It is now possible to configure the MacBook Pro's display with nano-texture glass, which reduces glares and reflections when using the device outdoors. Connectivity-wise there are no differences from its M3 predecessor, with the M4 also featuring two USB-C ports, three on the Pro and Max variants which also support Thunderbolt 5 with double the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4. The HDMI port can now drive external monitors of up to 8K resolution.
  • The camera has been upgraded from the 1080p FaceTime camera to a new 12MP Center Stage module in M4 models, which supports Desk View, showing the user's desk to aid with online classes. The M4 chip has a more efficient battery life than its predecessor, with up to 24 hours of run time, the longest of any Mac. These improvements can be found in the M4/Pro MacBook Pro for the same price as the M3, with an upgrade to higher base memory that previously cost an additional $200 on the M3 MacBook Pros.
  • The M4 MacBook Pro brings a significant leap in performance and efficiency with extra RAM and longer battery life, making it a good choice for anyone looking for faster performance and more value for money. If the buyer has an Intel-powered MacBook, this upgrade is recommended, but if the user already has an Apple silicon MacBook Pro, then it may be best to hold off upgrading for a year.
