updates: boss keeps bringing sick child to work, manager keeps asking for rides home, and more

  • An employee who wrote to Ask a Manager about their boss bringing her sick child to work says the situation escalated: the boss continued to break rules around workplace safety during a renovation, became hostile towards her employee and used them as a “release valve”. The author claims the result was that they resigned and cited unsafe working conditions and filed a complaint with the labour board. Another update concerns an employee who wanted their role expanded but didn't have the appropriate qualifications. Following feedback from HR, the employee dropped the idea and became reinstated after engaging with their job. Meanwhile another letter writer who was concerned that the reporting structure at their workplace was not fit for purpose reports they have taken a job at a private company that better suits their skillset.
  • An update on a previous letter featured on Ask a Manager tells how an employee complained their boss continued bringing her sick child to work. Their employer then dismissed their concerns when undertaking renovations to the office that caused unsafe working conditions. Following a series of complaints the employee quit and cited unsafe working conditions whilst filing a complaint with the labor board.
  • Another update featured on Ask a Manager follows an employee who no longer had interest in their old job and asked for an expanded role that they were not qualified for. They consequently dropped the idea and returned to their original role instead.
  • An employee who previously posted on Ask a Manager about her boss frequently asking to be given a ride says there have been no further issues since the publication of the post.

“I will confront you by Wednesday of this week”

  • A company's boss wrote a scathing email to the entire staff after the holiday party went terribly awry.
  • Problems arose when some of the staff, feeling emboldened by the open bar, began to cause trouble.
  • Irresponsible behavior included ordering shots for people who do not drink, getting drunk and belligerent, and making racial slurs.
  • The boss was particularly upset because an employee from another group groped his wife, and he responded by attacking the employee.
  • The email also chastised staff who did not control their spouses' behavior at the party.
  • Finally, the boss called for apologies from those who misbehaved.
  • He added that he would confront anyone who refused to apologize by a certain date, and they could lose their jobs as a result.
  • While this happened ten years ago, the email has lived on as a prime example of what not to do at a holiday party.
  • The email also serves as a strong reminder to employees that company events are not an excuse for reckless behavior.
  • It is important to maintain professionalism and respect for colleagues at all times, including during holiday parties and other company events.
